Ramiz Raja Biography
Ramiz Hasan Raja is a former Pakistani international cricketer turned commentator and cricket administrator. A right‑handed batter who represented Pakistan
Early life and backgroundRamiz Hasan Raja was born on 14 August 1962 in Faisalabad, then part of East Pakistan. He grew up in a sporting household: his father and grandfather played cricket at national level, his mother was accomplished at badminton, and his older brother Wasim Raja later became an international cricketer. Ramiz attended St. Anthony High School and Sadiq Public School, and went on to study at Government College and Aitchison College in Lahore before earning an MBA from the University of the Punjab. He lived in Model Town, Lahore.
Career
Ramiz made his international Test debut for Pakistan on 2 March 1984 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and debuted in One-Day Internationals on 6 February 1985 against New Zealand at Dunedin. A right‑handed opening batter who also bowled occasional leg break, he played domestic cricket for teams including Allied Bank, Islamabad Cricket Association, Lahore, Pakistan National Shipping Corporation, Punjab and Service Industries.
Early in his international career he experienced mixed fortunes. After a difficult start in Test cricket he established himself in both formats through a string of influential innings. In Test cricket he recorded a maiden century while following up a fightback in a match where Pakistan recovered from early trouble to post a competitive total. In ODIs he was a key member of Pakistan’s white‑ball side through the late 1980s and early 1990s, producing several match-winning knocks and valuable partnerships.
Ramiz was part of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup winning squad. In that tournament he produced important contributions across matches and took the final catch in the World Cup final that sealed Pakistan’s first title. He is noted for being one of the few batters to score multiple centuries in World Cups and for a number of uncommon records and milestones during his playing years.
Across bilateral series and multi-nation tournaments he produced standout ODI performances: crucial half-centuries and centuries in high‑pressure matches against teams such as India, Australia, West Indies and New Zealand. His ODI centuries and big scores helped Pakistan progress in tournaments including the 1987 World Cup, where he registered a maiden ODI hundred and helped Pakistan reach the semifinals.
After retiring as a player, Ramiz moved into broadcasting and cricket administration. He worked as a commentator for broadcasters including the BBC and Ten Sports. In September 2021 he was appointed for a second time as Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, becoming the 36th person to hold that office and one of a small number of former Test cricketers to lead the board. His administrative work has included involvement in coach appointments and the development of Pakistan’s national cricket infrastructure, including efforts connected with a national cricket academy.
Public profile
Ramiz is popularly known by the nickname "Rambo". He admired batting great Vivian Richards and named Wasim Akram among the bowlers he respected. As a commentator he has cited the influence of commentators such as Ian Chappell and Tony Greig.
During his playing career he was involved in notable and sometimes unusual incidents that attracted attention. He was the first player in One-Day International history to be given out for obstructing the field, dismissed on 99 in a match in November 1987. He also took a last‑ball catch in a World Cup final and finished his international career with several records relating to batting positions and appearances.
Personal life
Ramiz is married to Ambreen Ramiz Raja. He is the younger brother of Wasim Raja and has other relatives who have played at various levels of the game. Before his rise to prominence in cricket he worked in the banking sector after completing his MBA.
