Ramkripa Ananthan was born in 1971 and is Indian by nationality. She completed her undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani. After that she pursued postgraduate studies in industrial design at IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay, where her interest in automobile design deepened.

Career

Ananthan joined Mahindra & Mahindra in 1997 as an interior designer. Early in her career she worked on interiors for models such as the Bolero, Scorpio and Xylo. Over time she rose through the design ranks and became the head of design for key Mahindra projects.

Her most prominent role was leading the design team for the Mahindra XUV500. Appointed project head when the XUV500 development began, she guided a team of about 20 people through a multi-year design process. The program involved extensive customer research and iterative design development. The XUV500 project began around 2007 and reached production with a market launch in 2011. Under her leadership the vehicle became a significant offering in Mahindra’s SUV lineup and led to follow-on alpha-numeric models.

Following the XUV500, Ananthan and her team developed additional vehicles in the same family, including the TUV300, KUV100 and a facelifted XUV500. The team also worked on the Marazzo MPV.
