Early life and backgroundRani Rana was born in 1996 in Jakhara village near Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. She grew up in a family with a wrestling background: both her paternal and maternal grandfathers were wrestlers, and that family tradition shaped her early interest in the sport. As a child she trained in wrestling in her village and later moved to a city so she could continue more formal training. Her parents supported that move to help her pursue wrestling.
Career
Rana competes in the 55 kg category and trained at Indore’s Sports Authority of India for mat wrestling. She first came to national attention through strong performances at age-group and senior competitions. In 2019 she won the gold medal in the 55 kg division at the National Women’s Wrestling Championship in Shirdi, Maharashtra, becoming the first woman wrestler from Gwalior to win that title. That same year she represented India at the U23 Senior World Championships in Hungary and also competed at the Asian Championships in Xi’an, China.
Across domestic competition she has been a regular on the podium: sources attribute multiple bronze medals at the Senior Wrestling Championship over consecutive years from 2017 through 2020, and she has also taken gold at a senior national event held in Bhubaneswar. At the Senior Federation Cup in 2022 she won a silver medal.
Rana has also competed outside women’s-only contests. At a regional tournament she challenged and defeated a male opponent in under a minute using a Nelson hold; she described facing male competitors as part of proving that women can match strength and skill in the arena.

Reports say those family issues affected her ability to pursue wrestling at times.
