Ranjith Sreenivasan was born in 1981 and raised in Vellakinar in Alappuzha, Kerala. He completed his legal education with an LLB from Bharati Vidyapeeth New Law College, Pune, in 2001. His parents are named Sreenivasan and Vinodin Sreenivasan, and he had a brother, Abhijit. Ranjith practised Hinduism and was known locally for his involvement in both the legal profession and regional politics.

Career

Ranjith trained and worked as an advocate, actively participating in the local bar. He was a member of the Alleppey Bar Association and took on roles within lawyer organisations, including serving as district secretary for Bharathiya Abhibashaka Parishad, the Kerala chapter of the Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad. In politics he rose to become state secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party OBC Morcha and stood as the BJP candidate in the 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly election from the Alappuzha constituency, where he received 18,214 votes.

Death and legal aftermath

Ranjith Sreenivasan was killed at his home in Vellakinar, Alappuzha, on 19 December 2021 at the age of 40. Police accounts state the attack occurred in the presence of family members. Investigating authorities formed a special team led by Deputy SP N. R. Jayaraj of Alappuzha to handle the case. According to the prosecution, Ranjith's body bore numerous wounds; the investigation inspected many witnesses during the case.

Following the killing, charges were brought against multiple accused. A Kerala court found fifteen defendants guilty and sentenced them to death on 30 January 2024; those convicted were identified as members of the Popular Front of India. Prior to that verdict, the accused had sought trial transfers and appealed to higher courts, including the Supreme Court, which rejected an application seeking a change of venue.
