Early life and background

Ratan Naval Tata was born on 28 December 1937 in Bombay, Bombay Presidency, British India. He grew up in Mumbai and belonged to the Parsee community; his family practiced Zoroastrianism. His father was Naval Tata and his mother was Sooni Commissariat. Ratan’s maternal grandmother was connected to the broader Tata family, and he spent parts of his childhood at Tata Palace in central Mumbai.

Ratan Tata attended Campion School and Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai. He went on to study architecture at Cornell University in the United States, where he earned a B.S. degree in architecture with structural engineering. Later, in 1975, he completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School.

Career

Ratan Tata joined the Tata Group in 1961, beginning his career at Tata Steel with tasks on the shop floor. Over the following decades he rose through the organisation and was named chairman of Tata Sons in March 1991 when JRD Tata stepped down.

During his 21-year tenure as chairman (1991–2012), the Tata Group expanded into a global conglomerate. Under his leadership the group pursued several major acquisitions and launches: Tata Tea acquired Tetley; Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover; and Tata Steel acquired Corus. Domestically, Tata Motors introduced the Tata Indica in 1998, presented as India’s first indigenous passenger car. In 2009 he launched the Tata Nano, promoted at the time as an affordable small car.

Ratan Tata also introduced corporate governance changes at Tata Sons, including the institution of a retirement policy that set retirement ages for executive and non-executive directors.

Public profile

Ratan Tata was widely recognised for a low-key personal style despite leading one of India’s largest business groups. He was known for a restrained public persona and a reputation for simplicity. His interests included listening to classic Hindi songs, painting, driving, flying jet planes, playing the piano, reading, and spending time with his pet dogs.

He held a number of national and international honours: Padma Bhushan (2000) and Padma Vibhushan (2008); honorary British honours including KBE (2009) and GBE (2014); Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of Italy (2009); Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun from Japan (2012); Commander of the Legion of Honour from France (2016); and the Order of Australia (AO) in April 2023. He also received Sewa Ratna in October 2022 and the PV Narasimha Rao Memorial Award for philanthropy in 2024. In August 2023 he was presented Maharashtra’s first Udyog Ratna.

Ratan Tata held a pilot’s licence and flew military aircraft in demonstrations; in 2007 he became the first Indian to fly an F-16. He was an amateur architect who designed two homes: his mother’s and his own beach house in Mumbai. He counted among his close friends people such as Amar Bose and conductor Zubin Mehta.

Personal life and family

Ratan Tata remained unmarried and had no children. He described having been in love on several occasions and was linked publicly with actress Simi Garewal in accounts of his personal life. His siblings included Jimmy Tata and half-brother Noel Tata. Gujarati was his mother tongue. He was known to be affectionate toward dogs and maintained two pets named Maximus and Tito.
