Early life and background

Raveena Tandon was born on 26 October 1974 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She grew up in the city that would later become the centre of her professional life. Her parents are Ravi Tandon, a film producer, and Veena Tandon. Raveena attended Jamnabai Narsee School and later enrolled at Mithibai College, but she left her B.A. studies after two years as her rising popularity made continuing college difficult.

As a child she had ambitions outside films — she once wanted to become a pilot or an IPS officer — and her name is a blend of her parents’ names, Ravi and Veena. She has one brother, Rajiv Tandon, who is also associated with films.

Career

Raveena entered Hindi cinema with Patthar Ke Phool in 1991. The film brought her early notice and she earned a Filmfare New Face award as a newcomer. Through the 1990s she became known for a string of commercially successful films, with notable titles including Laadla, Dilwale, Mohra, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Ziddi, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Dulhe Raja.

Her work has not been limited to Hindi films: she appeared in the Kannada film Upendra in 1999, and over time added television presenting and judging to her résumé. She has hosted shows including Isi Ka Naam Zindagi and Simply Baatien With Raveena, and served as a judge on programs such as Sabse Bada Kalakar, The Drama Company and Nach Baliye 9.

Raveena has also taken on more challenging roles. She won the National Film Award for Best Actress for Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence (2002), and in the same period received a special Filmfare award for her performance in Aks. She served as chairperson of the Children’s Film Society of India from 2003 to 2004, resigning the position the following year for personal reasons.

Throughout her career she has been selective about projects; she turned down offers for several big mainstream films during a two-year hiatus from acting. Later roles include comebacks and performances in films such as Shab (2017), a release that drew attention for its mature content.

Public profile

Raveena cultivated a public image as a leading actress of the 1990s who successfully transitioned into television and character-driven work. She has been nicknamed “Ravs” and “Mast Mast Girl,” and her on-screen persona combined commercial appeal with occasional bold creative choices.

Her personal life has been a subject of media interest. She married Anil Thadani on 22 February 2004, and the couple have children: a son, Ranbir Thadani, and daughters Rasha Thadani and two adopted daughters. Her father, Ravi Tandon, died on 11 February 2022, and Raveena performed his last rites.

Raveena has been associated with a number of public controversies over the years, including disputes over the use of her images by matrimonial sites and social media incidents that attracted criticism. In 2018 she faced legal and public backlash after a commercial shoot at the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar, and in 2024 an incident involving the vehicle she was traveling in drew media attention and prompted coverage in national outlets.

Style and personal interests

Physically, published profiles list her height at approximately 5 feet 6 inches and weight around 60 kilograms. She is described as having black hair and black eyes. Outside acting, Raveena has expressed interests in reading and dancing. She has been associated with brands and a taste for luxury cars, and her on-screen career earned her both popular and critical recognition.

Latest updates

In recent years Raveena’s public life has included television work, film appearances and ongoing media coverage of personal and legal matters. In 2023 she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India, a national civilian honour recognizing her contributions to the arts.
