Ravi Krishnamurthy was born in Bangalore, Karnataka, where he grew up and completed his school and college education. He attended Sivananda Sarma Memorial RV Degree College in Bangalore and finished a graduation there. From an early age he was drawn to cricket, beginning to play around the age of five and representing his school and college teams. He also spent time playing club cricket in Bangalore.

Career

Professionally, Ravi pursued a career in software engineering and later worked as a software architect. In 1997 he and his family relocated to Wellington, New Zealand after he obtained a software engineer position there. He built a life in New Zealand while maintaining ties to cricket through coaching and local development.

Cricket involvement and coaching

Ravi helped establish the Hutt Cricket Academy in Lower Hutt, Wellington, where he also provides coaching. He was the first coach to his son, Rachin Ravindra, and devoted substantial time during Rachin’s formative years to developing technique rather than copying any single regional style. The coaching approach drew on lessons from notable international players and emphasised repetition and attention to detail.

To broaden training opportunities for his son, Ravi arranged winter trips to India so Rachin could work with different coaches in cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Anantapur. He and his wife named their son Rachin; although the name later appeared to echo the names of cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, Ravi has said the name was suggested by his wife and chosen because it was short and easy to spell, not specifically to honour those players.
