Early life and backgroundRavi Kumar Dahiya was born on 12 December 1997 in Nahri, Sonipat, Haryana. He grew up in a farming family; his father, Rakesh Dahiya, worked on rented paddy fields and supported Ravi’s interest in wrestling from an early age. That support included taking his son to train at Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium, where Ravi began formal coaching under Satpal Singh and later trained with personal coaches Kamal Malikov and others.
Ravi is nicknamed Monu. He stands 1.73 m (5 ft 7 in) tall, weighs around 57 kg (126 lbs), and has black hair and black eyes. He remained based in his hometown region while developing as a wrestler and has represented Haryana in domestic competitions.
Career
Dahiya’s international career began at the 2015 World Junior Wrestling Championship in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, where he won a silver medal in the 55–56 kg category. He continued to rise through age-group and senior ranks, claiming silver at the 2018 U23 World Wrestling Championship in the 57 kg division after recovering from an injury that had kept him out of competition in 2017.
In 2019 he earned a bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships in the 57 kg weight class, a result that helped secure his place in the 2020 Olympic field. That same period included a dominant run for the Haryana Hammers in the Pro Wrestling League, where he finished the season undefeated.
At continental level, Ravi won gold medals at the Asian Wrestling Championships in 2020 and 2021 in the 57 kg class. His continued international success led to his inclusion in India’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) in October 2019.
Tokyo Olympics and major achievements
Dahiya’s most prominent achievement came at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he competed in the men’s freestyle 57 kg category. He reached the final and won the silver medal, becoming the second Indian wrestler to reach an Olympic final after Sushil Kumar. His semifinal victory advanced him to the gold-medal bout against Zaur Uguev, where he ultimately finished second. The Olympic run followed earlier wins over highly regarded opponents in qualification and world events.
Other notable medals in his career include the 2015 World Junior silver, 2018 U23 World silver, 2019 World Championships bronze, and multiple Asian Championship golds. In recognition of his performances, he was awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2021.
Public profile
Ravi prepares for competition with a mix of gym work, ring practice, and tactical study of opponents; he has mentioned using match footage to develop game plans. Off the mat, he enjoys playing basketball in his spare time. He remains unmarried and retains strong ties to his family and hometown.
His rise from Chhatrasal Stadium’s training environment involved financial sacrifices by his family; coaches and senior wrestlers at the academy also contributed support when needed during his development.
