Early life and backgroundRavi Shankar Prasad was born on 30 August 1954 in Patna, Bihar. He grew up in the same city where he later pursued higher education at Patna University, earning a BA (Honours), an MA in Political Science and an LL.B. His father, Thakur Prasad, was a senior advocate at the Patna High Court and a political figure, and Prasad’s interest in law developed under his influence. As a student he was active in campus life — holding positions such as Assistant General Secretary of the Students Union and serving on university bodies including the Senate and faculty committees.
Career
Prasad trained and practised as a lawyer, beginning work at the Patna High Court in 1980. Over time he rose to senior status: he was designated a senior advocate at the Patna High Court in 1999 and at the Supreme Court of India in 2000. His legal work included public interest litigation in major cases, and he acted in the Ayodhya dispute as a representative for Ram Lalla.
His political path has been with the Bharatiya Janata Party. He joined the party’s National Executive Committee in 1995 and became the party’s National Convener of the Legal Cell in 2001. Prasad has been elected to the Rajya Sabha multiple times, first in 2000 and again in 2006 and 2012. Within the party he has held key organisational roles, including National Spokesperson and All India General Secretary and Chief National Spokesperson. In the Rajya Sabha he served as Deputy Leader of the BJP.
Prasad has held a number of ministerial roles in government. In the early 2000s he was appointed Minister of State with responsibilities across Coal and Mines, Law and Justice, and Information and Broadcasting. During the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee he carried portfolios that involved legal and media matters and initiatives related to film promotion and broadcasting reform. After the BJP returned to central power, he served as Minister of Law & Justice and Minister of Telecom & IT beginning in 2014, and later as Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology and Minister of Law and Justice.
He contested parliamentary elections from Patna Sahib in Bihar. In 2019 he won the seat by defeating the Congress candidate Shatrughan Sinha by a margin of 278,198 votes. He resigned from the Union Council of Ministers on 7 July 2021 ahead of a cabinet reshuffle. In 2024 he again contested and won the Patna Sahib Lok Sabha seat, this time by 153,846 votes.

He also represented Indian delegations at international film festivals.
