Early life and background

Ravi Shankar Upadhyay was born on 28 November in Chhapra, Bihar. He completed school at Vishweshwar Seminary High School in Sadhapur, Chapra, and pursued higher studies at Jai Prakash University in Chhapra, finishing in 2007. He grew up in a family that includes his father, Tuneshwar Upadhyay, who served as a police officer, and at least one brother.

Career

After completing his formal education, Ravi began working as a teacher in a local school in Chhapra in 2014. Alongside his role in education, he became known for social work focused on feeding the hungry.

In October 2018 he launched Roti Bank, Chapra, an organisation formed to provide free meals to people sleeping hungry at public places such as intersections, railway stations, bus stands and roadsides. The first distribution took place on 10 October 2018, the day of Dussehra, when he and a small group of friends fed seven people. That initial core group included Satyendra Kumar, Abhay Pandey, Ram Janam Manjhi and Bipin Bihari.

Roti Bank in Chapra grew from meals prepared at volunteers’ homes to a dedicated community kitchen named Maa Annapurna Community Kitchen. The project eventually employed two cooks on modest wages and began organising regular evening distributions. Under the structure Ravi helped build, Abhay Pandey serves as general secretary of Roti Bank (Chhapra) and coordinates nightly rounds, going out around 9 p.m. to deliver food to those who have come to rely on the service.

Each relief packet assembled for distribution contains a combination of staples and child-friendly items: a quantity of chuda and faruhi, a large packet of biscuits, namkeen, milk powder and soap for children. The Roti Bank team expanded its work beyond nightly meals: during the COVID-19 disruptions in 2020 it distributed food to families and arranged meals for migrant workers, and during Bihar’s flood seasons the group surveyed affected areas and provided targeted food relief where needed.

Ravi is also the national coordinator of the All India Roti Bank Trust, linking the Chapra effort to a wider movement that inspired his work.

Public profile

Ravi’s community work earned recognition from the Bihar government: in 2020 he received the Saran Gaurav Samman for his Roti Bank initiative. In November 2023 he appeared as a contestant on the television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati, bringing additional attention to his social efforts.

Outside of his public service and teaching, Ravi enjoys trekking. He is married and maintains interests that include social work and community outreach. On a personal note, he owns a Royal Enfield motorcycle and an Alto car.
