Ravi Varman Biography

Ravi Varman is an Indian cinematographer and director from Tanjore, Tamil Nadu, known for his work across South Indian and Hindi cinema. Self-taught in the

Early life and background

Ravi Varman was born in the village of Poyyoundarkudikkadu near Tanjore (Thanjavur) in Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a Tamil-medium government school and left formal education after the seventh grade. His childhood was marked by hardship: his father died soon after his birth and his mother passed away when he was about 12.

After losing his mother, Varman left his village for Chennai. He supported himself with low-paid work, including a stint as a waiter. A longstanding interest in photography drove him to learn on his own: he bought a secondhand Zenit camera and study material and began practising by taking pictures of friends and visiting film sets to find work.

Career

Varman began in the South Indian film industry as an assistant and apprentice to established photographers and cinematographers. Early on he worked under K. V. Mani and later with V. Ranga on the Rajinikanth film Mappillai. After further mentorship with Ravi K. Chandran, Varman made his debut as a feature film cinematographer on the 1999 Malayalam production Jalamarmaram.

From those beginnings he built a wide-ranging career across Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi cinema. He earned attention for inventive, often natural-light-focused approaches in films such as Shantham, where a closely observed nature shot drew praise, and Armaan, in which he filmed large portions using available light. He stepped into high-profile Tamil projects including Anniyan, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu and Dasavatharam and collaborated with directors such as S. Shankar, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Mani Ratnam.

Varman also worked frequently in Bollywood. His credits include Phir Milenge, Barfi, Ramleela, Jagga Jasoos, Sanju and Mission Mangal. He has photographed films in multiple languages and has been recognized for developing practical techniques and visual solutions on set, from experimental camera setups to the use of natural conditions to enhance imagery.

In 2010 he expanded into direction, making his directorial debut with the Tamil film Moscowin Kavery.

Public profile

Varman is known for a hands-on, image-first approach and for teaching himself many of his skills. He has described himself as a non-technical cinematographer who favours light and atmosphere. Over the years he has worked with prominent actors including Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan and Ranbir Kapoor, and with celebrated directors such as Anurag Basu, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Mani Ratnam.

He adopted the name Varman later in life, drawing inspiration from historical Chola rulers. Beyond feature films, Varman has shot more than 500 advertisements featuring public figures from entertainment and sport.

Family and personal life

Ravi Varman is married; his wife is an engineer. The couple have two children: a son named Arjith and a daughter. His early family life included the loss of both parents when he was young.
