Early life and backgroundRavichandran Ashwin was born on 17 September 1986 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Raised in a family with a sporting background, he began playing cricket at the age of nine for the YMCA. He attended Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and St. Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai before completing a B.Tech in Information Technology from Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering (SSN).
Ashwin initially started his cricket journey as an opening batsman and later as a fast bowler. A hip ligament injury at 14 and advice from family members led him to focus on spin bowling, a transition that shaped his professional career. He is known to enjoy reading, watching movies and several sports, including tennis, basketball and football.
Career
Ashwin made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in 2006, taking six wickets against Haryana in the Ranji Trophy. He went on to make his List A and domestic T20 debuts in 2007 and captained Tamil Nadu to the Vijay Hazare Trophy title in 2008–09. He joined Chennai Super Kings as a domestic player in 2008 and made his IPL debut in 2009.
On the international stage, Ashwin debuted in ODIs and T20Is in June 2010 during matches in Harare and made his Test debut against the West Indies in November 2011 at Delhi. He scored a maiden international century in the 2011 Test series against the West Indies and earned the man of the match award for that performance.
Across formats, Ashwin established himself as a leading off-spinner and a useful lower-order batter. He has several notable records: he became one of the fastest bowlers to reach key Test-wicket milestones, set home and series records for India, and accumulated multiple five-wicket hauls. He has repeatedly been recognised for his match-winning contributions, including numerous Man of the Series awards in Test cricket.
Ashwin has also been an important performer in limited-overs tournaments. He played key roles in India’s campaigns at major ICC events, including the 2011 World Cup-winning team and the 2013 Champions Trophy. He is also noted for rare feats—such as dismissing a batsman with the very first ball of an innings in Test cricket, and scoring centuries while taking five-wicket hauls on multiple occasions.
