Early life and background

Ravindra Berde was born in Maharashtra in 1945 and spent his life and career based in Mumbai. He came from a family in which several siblings contributed to the household income; one brother, Purshottam Berde, worked as a playwright, while his younger brother Laxmikant Berde became a well-known actor in Marathi and Hindi cinema.

Career

Berde began his career in the performing arts through theatre before moving into films and television. His first credited film role in Marathi cinema was in Vahinichi Maya (1985), in which he played Dinu Deshmukh. Over the following decades he became a familiar character actor in Marathi productions and appeared in more than 100 films during his career.

On television he was cast as a bus conductor in the Marathi series Nasti Aafat (1989). He also appeared in detective and crime television work, taking on various parts in DD National’s Suraag: The Clue (1999). In cinema he moved between Marathi and Hindi projects, taking supporting roles that brought him wider recognition.

Notable screen appearances include contributions to Marathi films such as Ek Gadi Baki Anadi (1988), Hamaal De Dhamaal (1989), Hach Sunbaicha Bhau (1992), and Houn Jau De (2009). In 1993 he featured as Hawaldar Tukaram (Tukya) in the Marathi comedy-horror film Zapatlela, which starred his brother Laxmikant Berde. The same year he had a supporting role in the family drama Santaan.

Berde’s work in Hindi cinema included character parts in high-profile films. In 2001 he appeared in Nayak: The Real Hero as one of Balraj Chauhan’s party supporters. In 2011 he played the role of Zamindar Chandrakant in the action film Singham. His final film credit was Bakaal (2019), a Marathi film in which he played Banwari Chacha.

Throughout his career he was known for dependable supporting performances across stage, television and film.

Physically, Berde was approximately 168 cm (1.68 m) tall (about 5'6"), with black eyes. He worked steadily in the Marathi entertainment industry and was recognized for both comic and dramatic parts.

Personal life

Berde was married and had two children. His family included notable members of the Marathi cultural scene; his younger brother Laxmikant Berde predeceased him in 2004.

Health and death

Berde was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2011 and received treatment at Tata Hospital in Mumbai. He experienced breathing difficulties during his illness and had a previous heart-related scare in 1995 when he suffered a heart attack while performing in a play. On 13 December 2023 he died at his home in Mumbai after suffering a heart attack. He was 78 years old at the time of his death. Former Rajya Sabha member Vikas Mahatme publicly expressed condolences on social media following his passing.
