Ravindra Kaushik (RAW Agent) Biography
Ravindra Kaushik, also known by the alias Nabi Ahmed Shakir and nicknamed Black Tiger, was an Indian intelligence operative who spent decades undercover in
Early life and backgroundRavindra Kaushik was born on 11 April 1952 in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, near the India–Pakistan border. He grew up in a family with ties to the armed forces; his father, JM Kaushik, served in the Indian Air Force and later worked at a local textile mill. Kaushik attended a government school in Sri Ganganagar and went on to SD Bihani College in the same town, where he completed a B.Com. During his college years he developed an interest in drama and mimicry, becoming well known among classmates for his performances.
Career
Kaushik joined the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) in 1973 and underwent two years of intensive training in Delhi. The training prepared him to live and operate as a resident agent in Pakistan, including language instruction, religious education, and detailed briefings on Pakistani society and geography.
In 1975 he deployed to Pakistan under deep-cover identity work. He adopted the name Nabi Ahmed Shakir and reportedly presented himself as a Muslim resident of Islamabad; documentation indicates he completed an LLB at the University of Karachi during his time there. Kaushik later entered the Pakistan Army’s Military Accounts Department as an auditor and rose to the rank of Major while secretly reporting information to RAW. His undercover service earned him the code name Black Tiger in recognition of a significant operation carried out in 1979.
From 1979 until 1983 he is reported to have transmitted several valuable pieces of intelligence. His deep cover allowed him to establish a domestic life in Pakistan: he married a Pakistani woman named Amanat and fathered a daughter. He also made reported visits back to India during his tenure, traveling via Dubai.
Arrest, imprisonment and death
Kaushik’s cover was compromised in 1983 after another Indian operative was arrested and revealed his identity during interrogation. He was apprehended by Pakistani authorities on charges of espionage. In 1985 he received a death sentence, which was commuted to life imprisonment in 1990. Over the following years he was held in multiple prisons in Pakistan, including Sialkot and Kot Lakhpat, and spent the final years of his life in custody.
During imprisonment he reportedly sent several letters to family describing harsh conditions. Despite appeals and efforts from his family to secure his release, formal repatriation did not occur. Ravindra Kaushik died on 21 November 2001 at age 49 in Central Jail Mianwali, Punjab, Pakistan. The cause of death is given as pulmonary tuberculosis and heart disease. He was buried behind the Central Jail in Multan.
