Early life and backgroundRavindra Mahajani was born in Belgaum, Karnataka, and later moved with his family to Mumbai, where he completed his education. He spent part of his early working life driving a taxi in Mumbai while pursuing acting opportunities in Marathi and Hindi films.
Career
Mahajani started appearing in films in the late 1960s. His Hindi film debut came in 1969 with Saat Hindustani, in which he played a police inspector. He went on to work across both Hindi and Marathi cinema, featuring in notable films such as Devta (1983), Mumbaicha Fauzdar (1984), Kalat Nakalat (1990) and the 2019 release Panipat.
In Marathi cinema he debuted as a lead in Zunj (1975) and continued to take a variety of roles through the 1970s and 1980s, appearing in titles including Aram Haram Ahe (1976), Chandoba Chandoba Bhaglas (1978), Ashta Vinayak (1979) and Duniya Kari Salaam (1979). He played Yeshwantrao Vastad in Soon Mazi Laxmi (1981) and took part in several productions during 1981, including Satichi Punyayee and the short film Devghar.
Mahajani broadened his on-screen work with roles in Hindi films through the 1980s, appearing in Be Aabroo (1983) and Kanoon Kanoon Hai (1987), and sharing the screen with Juhi Chawla and Kumar Gaurav in Goonj (1989), where he played Dennis Pereira. In Marathi cinema he was both actor and filmmaker: he directed the Marathi film Julum (1990) and also appeared in it as Inspector Ajay Bendre.
Across the 1990s and 2000s Mahajani continued to work in film and television. He appeared in the television series Teesra Dola (1998) and later in the Marathi comedy Dekhni Baiko Namyachi (2001) as Hindurao Patil. He also took part in television work in 2011, playing Nageshrao (Aaba) Jahagirdar in the series Arundhati.
In the 2010s Mahajani remained active in Marathi film, with roles such as the Captain in Kaay Raav Tumhi (2015) and a folk singer in Carry On Maratha (2015). His last credited film appearance was in Panipat (2019).

Mahajani was sometimes referred to within the industry as resembling the film star Vinod Khanna, a comparison that was noted for his physical likeness and screen presence. He was recognized with the Sarvashreshtha Kala Gaurav Puraskar in 2015.
Personal life
Mahajani was married to Madhu Mahajani. He and his wife had two children, a daughter and a son, Gashmeer Mahajani, who is an actor and has worked as a play director, filmmaker and choreographer. His father, H. R. Mahajani, was a journalist and freedom fighter.
Mahajani had a noted interest in travel and visited many places during his life. In the early 2000s he attempted a move into real estate that did not succeed and contributed to financial difficulties for his family. His son later established a dance studio as a means to help the family recover from those obligations.
Controversies
In 2002 an allegation was lodged by a partner at Saraswati Cinema related to an agreement for the exhibition of one of Mahajani's films; the dispute involved a payment shortfall and a subsequent dishonoured cheque. Mahajani was arrested in Mumbai in connection with the matter and was granted bail in January 2003 after posting a personal bond.
Death and legacy
Ravindra Mahajani died on 14 July 2023 at his residence in Ambi village, Talegaon Dabhade district, Pune, Maharashtra. Police reported that his body was discovered inside his rented apartment; officials indicated he had been living there for some months and had recently undergone surgery that limited his mobility. It was reported that he had been deceased for a period before being found. Mahajani left behind a body of work spanning five decades in both Marathi and Hindi film and television and is remembered in part through the continuing career of his son, Gashmeer.
