Ravneet Singh Bittu was born on 10 September 1975 in Ludhiana, Punjab. He grew up in a politically connected family; his grandfather Beant Singh served as Chief Minister of Punjab. Bittu attended Guru Nanak Public School in Chandigarh and completed formal education up to the 12th standard. His father, Swaranjit Singh, died when Bittu was a child. He practices Sikhism and lists Ludhiana as his hometown.

Career

Bittu entered electoral politics with the Indian National Congress and first won a seat in the Lok Sabha in 2009 from the Anandpur Sahib constituency. He secured that victory by a margin of more than 60,000 votes. In 2014 he was elected from Ludhiana and retained that seat in 2019, defeating his nearest opponent by a substantial margin.

During his parliamentary career he held party responsibilities: in December 2008 he became the first democratically elected president of the Punjab Youth Congress, and between March and July 2021 he led the Indian National Congress in the Lok Sabha for the budget session. In 2020 he was appointed a party whip in the Lok Sabha. He was active during the farmers' protests and participated in public demonstrations in 2020 and 2021, including a protest in parliament in July 2021 after adjournment of the house.

In March 2024 Bittu changed his party affiliation, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. He contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Ludhiana but lost. On 9 June 2024 he took oath as Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries in the third Modi cabinet.
