Reema Kagti (Film Director) Biography

Reema Kagti is an Indian film director, screenwriter and former assistant director from Assam. Best known for directing Talaash and Gold, she began in the

Early life and background
Reema Kagti was born in 1972 in Guwahati, Assam, and grew up with roots in Borhapjan, Tinsukia. Her father, Jitamrit Kagti, worked as a chemical engineer and farmer, and her mother, Purobi Kagti, was a teacher. She attended Delhi Public School before moving to Mumbai for higher studies. Kagti completed a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at Sophia College and then earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Social Communications Media from Sophia Polytechnic.

As a child she enjoyed writing and sold a short story to a children’s magazine, an early creative achievement she recalls as her first paid work. A formative cinema experience at age nine deepened her ambition to make films. Her grandfather had been involved in Assamese cinema as an actor and producer, and although her family initially reacted with surprise to her career choice, they later supported her pursuit of filmmaking.

Career
Kagti entered the Indian film industry through internships and assistant-directing roles. While studying for her diploma she chose to intern with a filmmaker, which led to an early assistant director opportunity on Rajat Kapoor’s project Private Detective. That experience paved the way for work with prominent directors on notable productions. Her assistant-director credits include Lagaan and other mainstream films, and she later worked on projects associated with directors such as Farhan Akhtar, Honey Irani and Mira Nair.

She made her directorial debut with the ensemble film Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007). Over the next decade she moved between directing and writing, contributing to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara as a screenplay writer and earning technical awards for story and screenplay for that film. Her film Talaash brought her wider recognition, and Gold (2018), starring Akshay Kumar, Farhan Akhtar and Kunal Kapoor, explored India’s first Olympic gold medal in hockey after independence; the actors were trained for the production by former Indian hockey captain Sandeep Singh.

Kagti has maintained close professional links with Excel Entertainment and the filmmaking community around Farhan and Zoya Akhtar, collaborating with peers and building a reputation as a director who moves comfortably between commercial and character-driven cinema.

Public profile
Physically, Kagti’s height is listed at approximately 165 cm (about 5 ft 5 in) and a weight around 60 kg (130 lbs). Her hair colour is described as salt and pepper and her eye colour as black. She has been recognized with awards including the European Fantastic Film Federation Asian Award for Talaash and technical awards for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

Kagti has spoken about the personal challenges of filmmaking; during the shoot of Talaash she experienced the loss of her father, which made that project particularly difficult. She is known to enjoy writing and cooking, and cites an eclectic list of favourite directors and performers that includes Indian and international filmmakers. She has acknowledged the influence of watching many films while growing up and described her DVD player as a key teacher in her early development.

Her ties to Assam remain important to her. Concerned about the region’s political and economic challenges, she helped organise a film festival in Guwahati in 2013 that included a short film competition intended to bring attention to local voices and stories. She has argued for enabling people from the region to tell subjective, personal accounts using accessible new technologies.
