Early life and background

Reena Gupta was born and raised in Delhi, India. She studied at Brandeis University, completing a Master of Arts in International Development at The Heller School for Social Policy and Management in 2001. She holds Indian nationality and is based in Delhi, which she lists as her hometown.

Career

Gupta’s early professional experience includes work in the United States with Oxfam America in Boston, where she was an NRM associate from June 2001 until February 2003. She returned to India and joined the World Bank in New Delhi as a natural resource management specialist, a role she held from February 2003 through September 2011.

Leaving the World Bank in 2011, Gupta moved into activism and public interest work focused on environmental and anti-corruption issues. Between September 2011 and August 2020 she worked as a freelance consultant on environment and sustainable development matters. In 2020 Gupta formally entered active politics with the Aam Aadmi Party. In her advisory capacity she helped develop a decision support system to identify major sources of pollution and create measurable action plans to address them.

Gupta has led and contributed to a number of Delhi-focused environmental initiatives. In 2020 she launched the Yudh Pradhushan Ke Virudh campaign to tackle air pollution in the city. She was involved in drafting rules for app-based ride services such as Uber and Ola, setting targets for the transition to electric vehicles. She also worked with neighbouring states and the central government to promote similar electric-vehicle measures.

In 2021 she developed the Green Delhi App and set up the Green War Room, platforms intended to enable residents to report localized pollution incidents. The following year she led the Greening Delhi initiative, which focuses on converting vacant plots into community parks and forests and upgrading neighbourhood parks.

Gupta has also served on regulatory bodies: she was later nominated as a member of the State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority by the Government of Delhi.
