Remo Fernandes is an Indian singer and composer from Panjim, Goa, whose career spans several decades and genres including pop, rock and fusion. Honoured by

Early life and background

Luís Remo de Maria Bernardo Fernandes was born on 8 May 1953 in Panjim, then part of Portuguese Goa. Raised in a family that included his parents Bernardo and Luiza Fernandes and a sister, Belinda, he showed musical curiosity from an early age. By the time he was four he was already familiar with multiple instruments and by 14 had written his first song. He attended Don Bosco High School in Panjim and later moved to Mumbai to study architecture, graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture from Sir J.J. College of Architecture.

Career

Remo’s musical life began in school bands in Goa. He formed The Beat 4 while in high school, serving as lead guitarist and singer; the group won local competitions for ensemble and instrumental performances. After college he travelled in Europe and absorbed the region’s musical and hippie cultures, performing in Goa with members of the Amsterdam Balloon Company and later collaborating with violinist Lucas Amor in Amsterdam.

His recorded output stretches from the 1970s into the 21st century. Remo’s early work includes an album with the band The Savages called Ode To The Messiah (1975) and subsequent projects such as Rock Synergy (1980), Goan Crazy (1980), Pack That Smack (1986) and Bombay City (1987). He released his English-language album Goan Crazy in the mid-1980s and later recorded Hindi material, with O, Meri Munni cited among his Hindi releases.

Remo formed and performed with several bands over the years, including Indiana and The Microwave Papadums. He endured a tragic episode when members of The Microwave Papadums and his personal assistant were killed in a road accident in 2000 after a concert. He has also lent his voice to popular advertising and film music; notable examples include the Old Lehar Pepsi commercial and playback contributions to Bollywood films such as Jalwa (1986), Bombay (1994) and Aflatoon (1997).

Remo’s live shows have drawn large crowds. A 50th-birthday reunion concert in Goa brought together his earlier groups and reportedly attracted around 25,000 fans for a marathon performance. Internationally, he has performed in cities and countries including New York, Brazil, Nairobi, Bahrain, Seychelles and Mauritius.

Public profile

Remo’s work has been recognised with a number of honours. He received the Press Critics Award and an Audience Favorite Award in 1986 and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2007. That same year he also received the Karmaveer Puraskaar. He has spoken publicly about his relationship to mainstream Indian film music, describing himself primarily as a composer and album artist who treats occasional Bollywood work as just that—occasional.

Personal life

Remo is an Indian national from Panjim, Goa. He follows Christianity and has described himself as a non-vegetarian. He has been married twice: his first marriage to Michele Delahaye ended in divorce; he married Zenia Santos Costa Pereira in 2018. He has two sons, Noah and Jonah Fernandes, from his first marriage. His interests outside music include drawing and reading; among the books he favors are Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Siddhartha and The Alchemist. He has said in interviews that he consumes alcohol and smokes.

Politics and public stands

Remo has expressed political positions at times. He has been associated with the Aam Aadmi Party in reporting. In 2007 he declined a Goa government reward that accompanied the national honour he received, citing his objections to political developments in the state and returning the accompanying memento, shawl, citation and cash reward of Rs. 50,000.

Latest updates

In 2021 Remo published his autobiography, Remo: The Autobiography of Remo Fernandes. He continues to be active as a performer and composer, and his long career remains noted for its blend of Goan roots, rock and fusion influences.
