Renuka Israni Biography

Renuka Israni is an Indian actress and writer from Jaipur best known for her portrayal of Gandhari in the 1988 television epic Mahabharat. A NationalSchool

Early life and background

Renuka Israni was born on 8 November 1966 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Raised in a middle-class Sindhi family, she completed her college education at Maharani College in Jaipur, graduating with honors as an all-rounder gold medalist. As a young woman she considered a medical career, and at 15 an astrologer predicted she would achieve prominence in the entertainment world.

After finishing her degree she moved to Delhi to pursue formal training at the National School of Drama. During her time at NSD she won an early television opportunity when she was cast in the pioneering serial Hum Log.

Career

Israni established herself on Indian television in the 1980s. Her breakthrough role came in 1988 when she portrayed Gandhari in B.R. Chopra’s TV adaptation of Mahabharat, a part that brought her wide recognition. She had already explored that character earlier in a Manipuri-style production of Andhayug, which she has said gave her a deep familiarity with Gandhari before joining Mahabharat.

Her screen debut in film followed later; she appeared in Meera Ke Girdhar (1993) and went on to feature in a number of other movies including Karamati Coat, Teri Payal Mere Geet, Jooth Bole Kauwa Kaate and Rishtey.

Across a career spanning decades, Israni has worked prolifically in television and cinema. The licensed information credits her with participation in roughly 70–80 television serials and 10–15 films. In 2011 she returned to television in the series Bade Achhe Lagte Hain playing the role of Shipra.

Public profile

Beyond acting, Renuka Israni is also a writer and poet. She holds personal beliefs in Buddhism. Throughout her career she has been noted for playing characters with strong emotional depth; a frequently remarked-upon trivia point is that her onscreen role as the mother of Duryodhan (played by Puneet Issar) in Mahabharat had her portraying a character older than the actor who played her son, despite being younger than him in real life.

Personal life

Israni was born and raised in Jaipur and remains unmarried. She has described taking a break from acting after her appearance in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain to care for her ageing parents. Her hobbies include travelling, writing poetry and listening to music. She is Indian by nationality and follows Hindu cultural roots alongside her personal belief in Buddhism.

Latest updates

In recent years she has appeared less frequently on screen as she balanced family responsibilities with her creative work. The most recent television credit noted in the available information is her 2011 role in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain.
