Early life and background

Renuka Singh Saruta was born on 5 January 1964 in Village Podi, Tehsil Maihar, District Koriya, in what was then Madhya Pradesh. She completed her higher secondary education through the Board of Secondary Education, Madhya Pradesh, in 1980. Listed as belonging to a Scheduled Tribe, she grew up in a rural setting and later made her home in Village Parshurampur, Tehsil Ramanuj Nagar, District Surajpur, Chhattisgarh.

She married Narender Singh on 19 May 1983 and the couple have four children: two sons, Piyush Singh and Lucky Singh, and two daughters, Babli Singh and Mona Singh. Her parents are named Fool Singh and Kailash Devi; she also has a sister. Personal interests reported for her include travelling, reading, gardening and social work.

Career

Renuka Singh’s political career began in local governance. She served on the Ramanuj Nagar District Panchayat and was elected to the Janpad Panchayat in 1999. The Bharatiya Janata Party appointed her president of the Ramanuj Nagar Mandal in 2000, and she became president of the Social Welfare Board in 2002.

Her first legislative victory came in 2003 when she was elected to the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly from the Ramanuj Nagar (Premnagar) area. That year she also joined the state cabinet as Minister of Woman & Child Development, a post she held from 7 December 2003 to 18 June 2005. She was re-elected as an MLA in 2008 from the Premnagar constituency and during that period served as a Minister of State with independent charge and as vice chairman of the Surguja Development Authority.

After losing the 2013 assembly election to Khelsai Singh, she returned to electoral politics at the national level. In the 2019 general election she contested the Surguja Lok Sabha seat and defeated Khelsai Singh by a reported margin of 157,873 votes. Following that victory, she was appointed Minister of State for Tribal Affairs on 30 May 2019 and served in that role until 7 December 2023.

In the 2023 Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly election she contested from the Bharatpur-Sonhat constituency and was elected, returning to the state legislature for a further term.
