Early life and background

Richa Manabendra Ghosh was born on 28 September 2003 in Siliguri, West Bengal, where she grew up and attended Margaret Sister Nivedita English School. Cricket was part of her life from an early age: she often trained alongside her father at local clubs and practiced with boys at her academy because there were no girls’ teams in her hometown. Her father, Manabendra Ghosh, who worked as a cricket umpire, took an active role in supporting her development and later stepped away from his business to focus on her training.

By the time she was eleven, Ghosh had been selected for the Bengal Under-19 side, and she went on to represent her state in domestic cricket. She developed a reputation for aggressive batting influenced by the way she practiced as a child, and she has said that MS Dhoni is one of the players she admires.

Career

A right-handed batter who also bowls right-arm medium, Ghosh made her international T20 debut for India on 12 February 2020 against Australia in Melbourne. She played her first One Day International on 21 September 2021 versus Australia at Mackay. She has not played Test cricket.

Early in her senior career she featured in India’s squads for major events: in January 2020 she was included in the 15-player Indian squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and also named for the Australia Tri-Nation series that followed.

Ghosh established herself as a powerful middle-order hitter. One of the standout performances recorded in her career is the fastest fifty by an Indian woman in an ODI, an innings of 52 off 26 balls against New Zealand in Queenstown. She has also been involved in notable lower-order partnerships for India, including a record eighth-wicket stand with Jhulan Goswami in the ODI against Australia at Mackay on 21 September 2021, and a seventh-wicket partnership with Deepti Sharma in a T20 against Australia in Carrara on 10 October 2021.

On the domestic and franchise front, she represents West Bengal, and in February 2023 she was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore at the inaugural Women’s Premier League auction. Her jersey number for India is 13.

Across age-group and domestic tournaments she produced several eye-catching contributions: she was part of the Bengal Under-19 team that won a tournament, and she scored 98 runs across four matches in the Women’s T20 Challenger Trophy in 2020. In recognition of her performances in Bengal, she received the Bengal Cricketer of the Year award in 2018.

Public profile

Ghosh is known for an energetic on-field presence and for fitness-focused routines off the field. She shares aspects of her life on social media, including pictures with animals and posts about her workouts and yoga practice. She has also engaged in charitable activity: in 2020 she donated to the Bengal Chief Minister’s relief fund to support the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Her family has remained closely involved with her career. Her mother, Swapna Ghosh, is described as a homemaker, and she has a sister, Shomasree Ghosh, who was a medical student. The family’s support has been a theme in accounts of her early progress and subsequent rise to the international stage.

Latest updates

In international play Ghosh continues to be used as a hard-hitting batter and a part-time medium-pace option. In 2022 she scored her first ODI half-century in Queenstown against New Zealand, an innings she described as a milestone and one that brought congratulations from her parents. In franchise cricket, the move to Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2023 WPL auction was a significant development in her career trajectory.
