Richie Berrington Biography

Richard Douglas Berrington is a Scottish international cricketer, born in Pretoria, South Africa, who has been a mainstay of Scotland’s batting and a long‑

Early life and background

Richard Douglas Berrington was born on 3 April 1987 in Pretoria, Transvaal Province, South Africa. He moved to Scotland as a child and progressed through the Scottish age-group system, representing the country from under‑13s up to under‑19s. As a teenager he earned selection for Scotland’s under‑19 side and was part of the squad for the 2006 Under‑19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka.

Berrington spent part of his development abroad, travelling as an 18‑year‑old with a European Cricket Council development team to India and taking part in the ICC’s winter training camp in Pretoria. His schooling and further education include time at Urban Assembly New York Harbor School and Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York.

Career

A right‑hand bat and right‑arm medium‑fast bowler, Berrington made his One Day International debut for Scotland on 2 July 2008 against Ireland at Aberdeen and his T20 International debut a month later on 2 August 2008 versus Ireland in Belfast. He wears jersey number 44 for Scotland and has represented domestic sides including Scotland, the Edmonton Royals and Scotland Under‑19s.

Berrington established himself as a regular in Scotland’s side across formats. He was part of Scotland’s squad at the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 and later became one of the early recipients of a full‑time Cricket Scotland contract in March 2010 after initially holding a seasonal deal.

He has produced several notable innings for his country. In June 2010 he scored 106 against India A to steer Scotland from a precarious position to a defendable total. In July 2011 he played an explosive 56 off 23 balls in an ODI chase that remains one of Scotland’s most memorable run chases. On 24 July 2012 he made a T20I century against Bangladesh, scoring 100 off 56 balls — a milestone that made him one of the earliest T20I centurions and the first from an associate nation to reach three figures in the format. That innings also helped Scotland record their first win over a full ICC member.

Berrington notched his first ODI century in September 2014 against Ireland, a performance that helped secure his place in Scotland’s squad for the 2015 Cricket World Cup. At that tournament he contributed a top score of 50 in Scotland’s opening match against New Zealand. He continued to reach career milestones in subsequent years: he crossed 1,000 ODI runs in 2016 and recorded his best List A score of 110 against Namibia in June 2017.

He also featured in record partnerships for Scotland. In January 2017, alongside Calum MacLeod, he shared a 127‑run partnership in a T20I against Hong Kong, setting the highest T20I partnership for Scotland at the time. In the 2018 World Cup Qualifier he was part of a national record 208‑run third‑wicket stand with MacLeod in the tournament opener against Afghanistan.

Berrington’s leadership responsibilities grew over time. He captained Scotland for the first time in January 2018 during the United Arab Emirates Tri‑Nation Series when the regular captain was unavailable. In June 2022 he was named Scotland’s captain after Kyle Coetzer stepped down, and he led the 15‑member squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. In December 2022 he became the first player to appear in 100 One Day Internationals for Scotland.

Public profile

Physically, Berrington is listed at approximately 1.83 m (6 ft 0 in) in height with brown hair and black eyes. He bats right‑handed and bowls right‑arm medium‑fast. He is identified with the zodiac sign Aries.

Personal life

Berrington is married and is a father to a son named Oliver. He holds Scottish nationality and is frequently described as having come through the Scottish cricket system from a young age.
