Rima Das Biography

Assamese filmmaker Rima Das is an independent director, writer and actor known for making intimate, rural-set films with local casts. Self-taught in most fi

Early life and background
Rima Das was born in 1982 in Chhaygaon, Assam, and grew up in the same town. She completed a bachelor’s degree in sociology at Cotton College in Guwahati and went on to earn a master’s degree in sociology from Pune University. Her parents are Bharat Chandra Das, who worked as a teacher, and Jaya Das, who ran a business. She is Indian by nationality and belongs to an Assamese family.

Career
Rima entered filmmaking from an early interest in acting and theatre. After moving to Mumbai to pursue acting she worked in stage productions, including an adaptation of Premchand’s Godaan at Prithvi Theatre. Prolonged gaps in acting work and a growing interest in cinema led her to study films on her own; she learned through reading, watching films and online materials rather than through formal film school training.

Her first short film as a director was Pratha, released in 2009. She made her debut feature as director and actor with Man With the Binoculars (2016). That film screened internationally and helped set the stage for her next project.

Das spent more than three and a half years writing her second feature, Village Rockstars, and filmed it over 130 days. For that project she cast non-professionals from her home region: her cousin Bhanita Das played the lead character Dhunu, while local boys from Chhaygaon served as co-actors and assisted on set. Das performed multiple roles on the production — directing, producing, writing, editing and handling cinematography — working with a largely organic, location-driven approach.

Recognition and festivals
Village Rockstars brought Das significant critical acclaim. The film was screened at festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival and was India’s official submission to the Oscars. At the 65th National Film Awards, Village Rockstars won the National Award for Best Feature Film, marking the second time an Assamese film had received that honor. The film also earned awards for location sound recording, best child artist and best editing. In 2018 Das received a Best Director nomination at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne while Bhanita Das was nominated for Best Actress.

Public profile
Das is known for working intimately with local communities and for a hands-on, resourceful filmmaking style. She has described herself as largely self-taught, having not attended a formal film school nor worked as an assistant to established filmmakers. Her stated hobbies include acting, writing, travelling and photography. She lists influences among a wide range of international and Indian directors and has expressed admiration for filmmakers whose work foregrounds human stories and naturalistic filmmaking.

Personal life
Publicly available information lists Rima Das as unmarried. She has two brothers; no sisters are reported. Her physical attributes reported in public profiles include a height of approximately 157 cm (5'2") and black hair and eyes.

Latest updates
