Early life and backgroundRinku Khanchandra Singh was born on 12 October 1997 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a large family as the third of six siblings. His father, Khanchandra Singh, worked delivering LPG cylinders, and the family lived modestly in a small two-room house on the compound of an LPG distribution company. Rinku attended Delhi Public School, Aligarh after earning admission through the sports quota and developed as a promising youngster in local and school competitions.
Rinku left formal schooling after failing ninth standard and focused on cricket to support his family. He has spoken about early hardships, including being offered menial work at a coaching centre and choosing instead to concentrate on his game. Those efforts helped transform his family’s circumstances over time.
Career
A left-handed batsman who bowls right-arm off break, Rinku represented Uttar Pradesh across age groups, including Under-16, Under-19 and Under-23 teams, and played for Central Zone Under-19 and the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association XI. He made notable early contributions in domestic junior tournaments, including scoring 154 on debut in the Vijay Merchant Trophy and recording strong performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy.
Rinku made his one-day debut for Uttar Pradesh on 5 March 2014 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and his T20 debut for the state followed on 31 March 2014 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He played his Ranji Trophy debut for Uttar Pradesh on 5 November 2016, producing useful runs in both innings. His domestic form underpinned a breakthrough 2018–19 Ranji season in which he finished as Uttar Pradesh’s leading run-scorer, compiling 803 runs in nine group-stage matches and 953 runs in ten matches overall, including four centuries.
Those performances brought IPL attention. Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) bought him at the 2017 auction, and he later joined Kolkata Knight Riders after an explosive 91 off 31 balls in a campaign match led to his purchase by KKR. He made his IPL debut for KKR on 8 April 2018. Across IPL seasons he gradually increased his impact, and in 2022 he registered 174 runs in seven matches with a first Man of the Match award after an aggressive 42 off 23 against Rajasthan Royals.
Rinku has also represented India at the A level and was named to India squads in white-ball formats: he made his T20 international debut on 18 August 2023 against Ireland and his One Day International debut on 19 December 2023 against South Africa in Gqeberha. He has not played Test cricket for India.
Rinku’s reputation for finishing matches grew further in the 2023 Indian Premier League when he struck five consecutive sixes off Yash Dayal in the final over to complete a dramatic run chase for Kolkata Knight Riders against Gujarat Titans. That performance brought him widespread recognition as a powerful late-innings batsman.
Injuries and setbacks
Rinku suffered a meniscus tear in his right knee during a Vijay Hazare Trophy match, which required surgery and a recovery period that kept him out of competition for several months and caused him to miss the 2021 IPL season.
