Early life and background

Rio Kapadia was born in 1957 in India. Standing approximately 1.80 m (5'11") tall, he was known for his black eyes and salt-and-pepper hair. Outside of acting, Kapadia enjoyed pencil sketching and produced portraits of film personalities and drawings of classic Ferraris, which he shared on social media.

Career

Kapadia built a long career as a character actor across Hindi films, television serials and web series. He made his film debut in 2001 with a role in Dil Chahta Hai and went on to appear in a steady stream of supporting parts in mainstream cinema. His film work included appearances in Mumbai Meri Jaan (2008), Chak De! India (2007) as the Australian commentator, Agent Vinod (2012) as Alay Khan, Khuda Haafiz (2020) as Commander Ali Azam Ghazi, The Big Bull (2021) as NCC MD Singh, and Happy New Year (2014). He also had roles in Aakhari Decision (2010), Shree (2013) and Mardaani (2014).

On television, Kapadia took on diverse roles in serials and episodic dramas. Early television credits include an appearance in the detective series Suraag – The Clue (2000) and the long-running soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (2000) as Vikram Ahuja. He was seen in a variety of popular Hindi shows over the years, such as Kkusum (2004), Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai (2005), Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai (2007), and Savdhaan India (2012). In 2004 he played the chief executive officer of a fictional news channel in the StarPlus superhero series Karma – Koi Aa Raha Hai Waqt Badalney.

Kapadia won praise for his television work, notably for his portrayal of Akash Kumar Sandhu, Gunjan’s father, in the Zee TV series Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke (2013). That same year he appeared in StarPlus’s Mahabharat as King Subala.

As the entertainment industry shifted to digital platforms, Kapadia continued to work on web series. He played Major General M. Sundar Raman in The Test Case (2017), Manekshaw Nanavati in The Verdict – State vs Nanavati (2019), and was part of City of Dreams (2019) and Bombay Begums (2021). One of his final screen credits was Made In Heaven Season 2 (2023), in which he portrayed Keshav Arya. He had been a member of the Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) since 2004.

Public profile

Kapadia appeared in television commercials as well, including an advertisement for Starbucks. Married to his wife Maria, he was the father of a daughter, Farah Kapadia. He lived and worked primarily in India and was active across stage, television and emerging streaming content.

In 2022 Kapadia was reportedly diagnosed with cancer. He passed away on 14 September 2023 at the age of 66. His last rites were carried out at Shiv Dham Shamshan Bhumi in Goregaon on 15 September 2023.
