Rishi Raj Kapoor was born on 4 September 1952 in Chembur, Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in a prominent film family and made an on-screen appearance as a toddler in the song from Shree 420. His schooling included brief time at Mayo College, Ajmer, and attendance at Campion School in Mumbai. He did not pursue formal college education.

Career

Kapoor’s film career began as a child actor in Mera Naam Joker (1970), where he played the younger version of his father’s character. He rose to widespread fame as the romantic lead in Bobby (1973), a film that established him as a leading man and earned him major recognition early in his career.

Across the 1970s through the 1990s he featured in a mix of box-office hits and disappointments. Notable films from this period include Prem Rog (1982), Nagina (1986), Chandni (1989), Henna (1991), and Bol Radha Bol (1992). He also tried his hand at directing, making his directorial debut with Aa Ab Laut Chalen in 1999.

In later years Kapoor successfully reinvented himself as a character actor. His supporting work earned critical and industry praise: he won multiple awards for roles in films such as Do Dooni Chaar, Love Aaj Kal, Agneepath, Kapoor & Sons, and others. He portrayed a chilling villainous turn in Agneepath (2012) and undertook demanding prosthetic make-up to play an elderly character in Kapoor & Sons (2016). His final film role was in The Body (2019), in which he appeared as SP Jairaj Rawal.

Over his career Kapoor received numerous honours, including a Filmfare Award for Best Actor early on for Bobby, a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, and several later awards recognizing supporting work and lifetime achievement.
