His parents worked in healthcare: his father was a general practitioner and his mother ran a local pharmacy where he sometimes helped as a child. He attended Winchester College, a boarding school in Hampshire, where he served as head boy.

Career
Sunak began his professional life in finance. He worked as an analyst at Goldman Sachs from 2001 to 2004 and later joined the London hedge fund Children’s Investment Fund Management in 2006. After leaving that firm in 2009 he cofounded an investment fund, Theleme Partners, in 2010, launched with a reported initial capital commitment.
He entered frontline politics in 2014 when he became the Conservative candidate for Richmond (Yorks). He won the seat in the 2015 general election and was re-elected in 2017 and 2019 with increasing majorities. Early parliamentary work included a place on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee.
Sunak’s ministerial career advanced rapidly. He served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government from January 2018 until July 2019, when he was appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury. In February 2020 he was promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer, the government’s lead on financial and economic policy.
In July 2022 he resigned as Chancellor, citing loss of confidence in the then-prime minister’s leadership. He contested the Conservative leadership later that year and, following a leadership contest in October 2022, replaced Liz Truss to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He was the 57th person to hold the office and the first British prime minister of Indian origin. After the 2024 general election, Keir Starmer succeeded him as prime minister.
