She has two siblings, including a brother, Manish Khanduri, who is also active in politics.

Career

Before entering electoral politics, Ritu Khanduri worked in academia. From 2006 until 2017 she taught at Amity University in Noida. Her move into electoral public life began in 2017 when she contested the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly election from the Yamkeshwar constituency and won, defeating a former minister.

When party leadership asked her to shift constituencies ahead of the 2022 elections, she stood from Kotdwar and won that seat. Shortly after the 2022 election victory she was chosen as the speaker of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly, becoming the first woman to hold that office in the state’s history. Her appointment marked a continuation of her family’s political involvement in Kotdwar: her father had contested from there a decade earlier.
