Early life and background

Riya Deepsi was born on 19 May 1996 and grew up in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, before her family relocated to Mumbai when her father was transferred there. She later made Mumbai her hometown. Deepsi pursued formal education in film and holds a Bachelor of Arts in film-making. She also studied at the Zee Institute of Media Arts (ZIMA).

Career

Deepsi began her performance journey in theatre, where she spent several years with Nadira Babbar’s theatre group. That stage experience would prove important when she transitioned to television and screen acting.

Her earliest on-screen work included a brief cameo on the television series Mata Ki Chowki. At 17 she made a significant leap into mainstream television by playing Gandhari in the 2013 series Mahabharat. Despite being much younger than the character and some of the actors who played her sons, Deepsi attracted attention for her portrayal of the blind, tragic matriarch and one of the show’s protagonists. The role required her to rely on body language and controlled movements while performing with a blindfold.

Following Mahabharat, she continued to work in period and historical dramas. In 2015 she appeared as Salima Sultan Begum in Bharat Ka Veer Putra – Maharana Pratap and played Fatima in the series Razia Sultan. In 2016 she joined the cast of Begusarai and expanded into celebrity reality sport by participating in the Box Cricket League; she represented Chennai Swaggers in season 2 and Goa Killers in season 4.

In 2017 Deepsi took on the role of Barsine, a captive in the historical drama Porus. She made her film debut with Bhaagte Raho in 2018 and moved into digital projects with her web-series debut in Be Safe (2019). She followed that with a role in the web series It Happened in Calcutta in 2020.
