Robert Mueller Biography

Robert Swan Mueller III is an American attorney and former Marine officer who served as the sixth Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2001

Early life and background

Robert Swan Mueller III was born on August 7, 1944, in New York City and was raised outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, where he was a standout athlete, captaining the soccer, hockey and lacrosse teams and receiving the school’s top athletic honor in 1962.

Mueller completed his undergraduate degree at Princeton University in 1966 and earned a master’s degree in international relations from New York University the following year. After military service, he returned to law school and received a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1973.

Military service

Following his graduate studies, Mueller joined the United States Marine Corps in 1968 and served until 1971. He served with H Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division during the Vietnam War and left the service with the rank of captain. His decorations include a Bronze Star with Combat "V," a Purple Heart, a Navy Commendation Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and the South Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

Career

After earning his law degree, Mueller began his legal career in private practice as a litigator. He then spent more than a decade working in United States Attorney’s offices, beginning in the Northern District of California in 1976. Over the years he served in several senior Justice Department roles, including Acting United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts in the mid-1980s, Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division from 1990 to 1993, and United States Attorney for the Northern District of California from 1998 to 2001.

In January 2001 he served briefly as Acting United States Deputy Attorney General. Later that year, on July 5, President George W. Bush nominated Mueller to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation; he took office as FBI Director on September 4, 2001. Mueller’s tenure as director spanned the period immediately before and after the September 11 attacks. His term was extended in May 2011 by President Barack Obama for an additional two years beyond the customary ten-year appointment, and he served until September 4, 2013, when James Comey succeeded him. He is the longest-serving director since J. Edgar Hoover and the first to be appointed to an extra two-year term.

After leaving the FBI, Mueller spent a year as a consulting professor at Stanford University. In 2016 he received the Thayer Award from the United States Military Academy for public service.

Special counsel appointment

In May 2017 Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel for the Department of Justice to oversee the inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election. He submitted his report to Attorney General William Barr on March 22, 2019. The Department of Justice released the special counsel’s final report on April 18, 2019; Mueller resigned his post and the Office of the Special Counsel was closed on May 29, 2019. In July 2019 he testified for more than five hours before congressional panels regarding the investigation and its findings.

Public profile

Mueller has maintained a reputation as a career public servant with experience in military service, federal prosecution and law enforcement leadership. Raised Presbyterian and later an Episcopalian, he is identified with the Republican Party in public records. He is known for a reserved public persona and a professional focus on institutions and procedure.

Personal life

Mueller married Ann Cabell Standish, a high school friend, in September 1966 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. The couple have two daughters, Cynthia and Melissa. His parents were Robert Swan Mueller II and Alice C. Truesdale; both predeceased him.
