Early life and backgroundRobin Aiyuda Uthappa was born on 11 November 1985 in Kodagu, Karnataka. Raised in a sporting household, his father Venu Uthappa served as an international hockey umpire and later took on a leadership role in the Karnataka Hockey Association. Robin attended Delhi Public School in New Delhi. He has one sister, Sharon. Uthappa grew up in a family that encouraged sport; he developed an interest in cricket early and also collected watches and enjoyed watching tennis.
Career
Uthappa made his ODI debut for India on 9 April 2006 against England in Guwahati and played his first T20 international on 13 September 2007 versus Scotland in Durban. He did not feature in Test cricket for India. Over a long domestic and franchise career he represented Karnataka and a number of high-profile teams in the Indian Premier League and other competitions, including Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, Pune Warriors and stints in county and domestic teams. He wore the number 6 jersey for India and in several of his franchise assignments.
Known for an aggressive approach at the crease and often deployed as a wicket-keeper batsman, Uthappa registered several notable achievements. Early in his career he made an impression at the 2005 Challenger Trophy, scoring 66 for India B against India A, which helped point to his readiness for higher honours. In an ODI debut he scored 86, the highest by an Indian on debut at the time, and in the 2014 IPL season he was the tournament’s leading run-scorer, winning the purple cap with 660 runs.
