Rohan Gavaskar Biography

Early life and background
Rohan Sunil Gavaskar was born on 20 February 1976 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a cricketing household as the son of former India great Sunil Gavaskar and Marshneil Gavaskar. Rohan attended St. Xavier’s Collegiate School in Kolkata and Bombay Scottish School before studying at Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College of Commerce and Economics. He is Indian by nationality and is associated with Mumbai as his hometown.

Career
Rohan Gavaskar established himself as a left-handed middle-order batter who also bowled left-arm orthodox spin. He built his reputation largely in domestic cricket, representing Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and playing for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy. He appeared for a number of domestic and franchise sides through his career, including Bengal, India A, India B, Young India, Rest of India, Wills XI, PCA Masters XI, Indian Invitational XI, Royal Bengal Tigers, the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, and other representative teams.

Seeking more opportunities in a strong Mumbai lineup, he chose to play for Bengal where openings for specialist batters were more available. He captained Bengal for two seasons beginning in 2001–02; under his leadership the team reached consecutive Ranji Trophy finals but did not secure the title. One notable domestic performance came in 2003 when he scored 139 for India A against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, a contribution that helped his side to victory.

International cricket came for Rohan in January 2004 when he was selected for the VB Series in Australia, stepping into the playing eleven after an injury to another player. He made his One Day International debut on 18 January 2004 against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. Across his brief international stint he played 11 ODIs for India. He recorded his only international fifty against Zimbabwe on 24 January 2004, a top score of 54. In his second appearance he took the wicket of Andrew Symonds, a key moment early in his international bowling career.

Following the Australia series, Rohan was part of selection experiments for subsequent tours but did not become a long-term fixture in the national side. In 2007 he signed with the Indian Cricket League (ICL) for the Kolkata Tigers; that league was later declared unauthorized by the BCCI. After the ICL period, the BCCI granted amnesty to a group of players in 2009, allowing him to return to mainstream domestic cricket. He featured for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the third season of the Indian Premier League. Rohan’s final first-class match came in 2009, and he announced his retirement from professional cricket on 9 February 2012.
