Rohit Bal Biography
Rohit Bal was an Indian fashion designer known for richly ornamented collections that blended traditional Indian motifs with contemporary silhouettes. Born
Early life and backgroundRohit Bal was born on 8 May 1961 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. He grew up in a Kashmiri Pandit family and attended schools in Srinagar before moving to Delhi for higher education. Bal completed a first-class degree in History at St. Stephen's College, Delhi University and went on to study fashion at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi.
Career
Bal began his professional journey in the fashion business when he and his elder brother Rajeev Bal established Orchid Oversea Pvt. Ltd. in 1986. He launched his first independent collection in 1990, offering apparel for both men and women, and later opened a flagship store in New Delhi followed by outlets in several Indian cities.
His work became known for combining the opulence of India’s royal past with modern design language. Bal frequently drew inspiration from Mughal and Gupta-era art and incorporated motifs such as the lotus and peacock into his garments. Time magazine described him as a master of fabric and fantasy in the late 1990s, and his creations found favor with both Indian and international celebrities.
Over the years Bal formed partnerships with a range of brands and designers. He served as a designer for Khadi Gram Udyog, became an ambassador for Omega watches in 2001, and collaborated with international names including Christian Louboutin, Nebula-Titan watches, and Reid & Taylor. Commercial tie-ups extended into lifestyle and product categories — he worked with Oriflame, Zippo, and the carmaker Mitsubishi, for which he launched an Outlander Signature Collection alongside the Outlander SUV in 2010.
Bal’s commercial ventures also included hospitality. He opened the restaurant Veda in New Delhi in 2014 with a business partner; the venue earned recognition from Condé Nast Traveller and led to additional outlets and a second restaurant called Cibo.
Accolades
Across a multi-decade career Bal received industry recognition and awards. He won Designer of the Year honors at major Indian fashion awards, was chosen to close the Lakme Grand Finale in 2012, and was recognized by a national fashion awards jury in 2020 as an iconic designer of the country. His work continued to appear on international red carpets and fashion stages; for example, a Rohit Bal piece was worn at the Met Gala in 2018.
Public profile
Bal maintained a public persona that mixed flamboyance with a deep respect for traditional craft. He worked with Bollywood stars and styled international personalities including models and actors. He admitted to preferring traditional sketching methods over digital tools, often drawing designs with pencil and paper.
Personal life
Bal did not marry. His parents were Duffy Bal, who died in 1968, and Rakka Bal. He had one brother, Rajeev, and two sisters, Aruna Bal Sharma and Neera Bal. He identified as Hindu and followed a vegetarian diet. Among his personal interests were watching films and playing tennis, and he listed writers such as Thomas Hardy and Paulo Coelho among his favourites.
Health and challenges
Bal experienced serious health issues at various points. In February 2010 he suffered a heart attack and underwent emergency angioplasty. Reports indicate periods of struggle with alcohol that required hospital admissions and treatment; in late 2022 and again in 2023 he was admitted to hospital in critical condition.
Controversies
Several incidents in Bal’s life drew public attention. In 2010 an FIR was filed against his restaurant Cibo alleging inappropriate activity, a claim the co-owner denied. In 2017 Bal was arrested briefly after a complaint from a neighbour regarding a confrontation; he was released on bail and the dispute was described by his team as a parking-related altercation.
