Rohit Shetty (Director) Biography
Rohit Shetty is an Indian film director, producer and television host known for mainstream commercial cinema, notably the Golmaal franchise and his Cop-30s
Early life and backgroundRohit Shetty was born on 14 March 1974 in Bombay, Maharashtra. He attended St. Mary's High School & Junior College in Mumbai. From a young age he was connected to the film world: by his late teens he was already working on sets and doing stunt work while learning the craft that would shape his career.
Career
Shetty moved up through film crews in the 1990s and worked as an assistant director on several projects. He made his debut as an independent director with the film Zameen in 2003 and established himself with the comedy Golmaal in 2006, which became a defining franchise for him. Golmaal 3 (2010) was a major commercial success and entered the domestic 100 Crore Club.
Over the next decade he directed a string of high-profile mainstream films, including Bol Bachchan (2012), Chennai Express (2013), Dilwale (2015), Simmba (2018) and Sooryavanshi (2021). In 2011 he launched what is commonly referred to as his Cop Universe with Singham, building a recurring world of policeman-led action films.
Shetty has also worked regularly on television. He has hosted multiple seasons of the stunt reality show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi (including the 2014 season) and served as a judge on comedy and talent shows such as Comedy Circus (2009–2011) and India’s Next Superstars (2018). He has made guest appearances on a variety of Indian TV programs and has continued to move between films and television throughout his career.
In 2022 Shetty expanded into digital storytelling with the web series Indian Police Force, his first project for a streaming format. The series continued his interest in police-centred stories and featured actors including Sidharth Malhotra, Shilpa Shetty and Vivek Oberoi. He also announced plans to develop a biopic on Mumbai police officer Rakesh Maria.
Public profile
Shetty is known for mass-entertainment filmmaking with large-scale action, stunts and set pieces. Over time he has become associated with films that highlight Mumbai police characters and big, spectacle-driven sequences involving vehicles and explosions; this reputation was referenced publicly when automotive industry figures commented on the dramatic treatment of cars in his films.
He has received industry recognition for his commercial work, including awards tied to films such as Chennai Express, Bol Bachchan, Singham Returns and Golmaal Again. Beyond directing and producing, Shetty has been the face of brand campaigns and in 2022 became a brand ambassador for a clothing label.
Personal life
Shetty is married to Maya Rohit Shetty, who works in banking. The couple married in 2005 and have a son, Ishaan. He is the son of stuntman M. B. Shetty and Ratna, and has several siblings including stepbrothers Hriday and Uday and sisters Chanda, Chaya and Mehek.
Shetty keeps active interests outside filmmaking; he enjoys travelling and working out, and is known to collect high-end cars. Physically, his height is listed at approximately 178 cm (5'10"), and he has black hair and black eyes.
Latest updates
