Early life and backgroundRoop Kumar Rathod was born on 10 June 1973 in Mumbai, India, into a family with deep musical roots. From an early age he was surrounded by music and took to instruments as a child. He learned to play the tabla and gave his first solo tabla performance at the age of six. Formal training in musical instruments began around age ten, and for many years he focused on instrumental performance rather than singing.
A turning point came in the mid-1980s when Rathod decided to study singing. He spent time in London receiving vocal training and also taught tabla there while beginning to perform singing shows. That period helped him move from being primarily an instrumentalist to developing a professional singing career.
Career
Rathod made his playback singing debut in 1989 with the song "Main Tera Aashiq Hoon" from the film Gumraah. While he had long experience as a live performer, his entry into the film industry brought wider recognition. A major break arrived in 1997 when his rendition of "Sandese Aate Hain" from the film Border became widely popular and raised his profile significantly.
He has lent his voice to songs in a variety of Indian languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Assamese, Tamil, Oriya, Nepali, Telugu, Bhojpuri, and Bengali. Despite his success in films, Rathod has consistently emphasized live performance as a primary interest; he has toured and performed concerts around the world, including in the UK, the United States, Singapore, Dubai, and parts of East Africa.
Rathod has also worked as a music director and released recorded projects in collaboration with other artists. In 2008 he and his wife competed on the television reality show Mission Ustaad, where they won the Ustaad Jodi title. The couple later released a Sufi album titled Kalmaa.
