Early life and background

Rovman Powell was born on 23 July 1993 in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up in Old Harbour and was raised by his mother, Joan Plummer. From a young age he combined sport and education, attending Davis Primary School in Old Harbour and later Old Harbour High School. His sporting ability earned him a scholarship to the University of the West Indies, where he completed a bachelor’s degree in Geography and Social Studies in 2015.

Powell took part in athletics during his early years before concentrating on cricket following encouragement from a school teacher. He has credited his mother with providing the encouragement and motivation that shaped his determination to succeed in sport and to support his family.

Career

Powell is a right-handed middle-order batter who also bowls right-arm fast-medium. He emerged through regional age-group cricket, representing Jamaica Under-19 and Leeward Islands Under-19, and made his List A debut in the 2014–15 Regional Super50 for Combined Campuses and Colleges. He then made his first-class debut for Jamaica during the 2014–15 Regional Four-Day Competition.

At international level Powell made his One Day International debut on 16 November 2016 against Sri Lanka and his T20 International debut on 26 March 2017 against Pakistan. He did not make a Test debut as of January 2024. His ODI highlights include an unbeaten 44 off 29 on debut, a first ODI half-century (59) versus New Zealand in December 2017, and his maiden ODI century, 101 against Ireland in March 2018. In T20 internationals he recorded his first fifty against Bangladesh in December 2018 and scored his first T20I century on 26 January 2022, when he made 107 off 53 balls against England.

Domestically and in franchise cricket Powell has been widely active. He played for Jamaica in domestic competitions and appeared for Combined Campuses and Colleges in 2015. In the Caribbean Premier League he was drafted by Jamaica Tallawahs (2017–2022) and signed by Barbados Royals in 2023. In the Indian Premier League he has been part of Kolkata Knight Riders (2017), Delhi Capitals (2022), and was acquired by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2024 season. Powell has also appeared in other global T20 leagues including stints with Comilla Victorians and Dhaka Dynamites in the Bangladesh Premier League, Peshawar Zalmi and Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League, Kandy Warriors in the Lanka Premier League, Northern Warriors and Delhi Bulls in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, New Jersey Stallions in Minor League Cricket, and Dubai Capitals in the International League T20.

Powell has been entrusted with leadership roles for the West Indies. He captained the ODI side for the first time in December 2018, and after the 2022 T20 World Cup he became captain of the West Indies T20 team.
