Early life and background

Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil was born on 16 December 2003 in Thane, Maharashtra. Raised in a family with both parents serving in the police force, he grew up alongside a younger brother. His schooling was at Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane. From a young age he took part in a variety of sports; his parents enrolled him in summer camps that exposed him to swimming, table tennis, chess, badminton, skating and football.

He first tried shooting at about thirteen when his father, then a deputy commissioner of police, attended the inauguration of a shooting range in Thane. A local coach encouraged him to give the sport a go. After an initial break from training, he returned at his mother’s insistence and began competing in school-level events, gradually building momentum.

Career

Patil’s early coaching included guidance from Snehal Papalkar at the Dronacharya Sports Academy. In 2017 he started training under coach Ajit Patil, who relocated to Thane to work with him full time. Their early practice environment was modest: a school range with manual targets and limited lighting. Over time they upgraded equipment and lighting using prize money from tournaments.

At the national level Patil won gold at the Khelo India Youth Games 2020 in the boys’ 10m air rifle U-17 category. He moved steadily through junior international competition, earning a silver in the 10m air rifle at the 2021 ISSF Junior World Championships in Lima and a senior silver at the 64th National Shooting Championship Competitions in Bhopal the same year.

In 2022 Patil’s results accelerated. He took gold in the junior 10m air rifle at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl and contributed to a team gold in the junior men’s 10m air rifle at that event. After transitioning to senior events he placed seventh at the Baku World Cup and eleventh at the Cairo World Cup.

October 2022 proved a breakthrough month. Patil claimed national gold in the 10m air rifle at the 36th National Games of India. Later that month he won the men’s 10m air rifle title at the 2022 ISSF World Championship Rifle/Pistol in Cairo, securing an Olympic quota place for India at Paris 2024. He also shared team gold in the 10m air rifle at that world championship.

His momentum continued into December 2022 when he won the 10m air rifle at the ISSF President’s Cup in Cairo and received the Golden Target Award for the category. That victory propelled him to the top of the ISSF world rankings for the men’s 10m air rifle.

In 2023 Patil claimed individual gold in the 10m air rifle at the ISSF World Cup in Cairo and partnered with Narmada Raju to take gold in the 10m mixed team event, posting one of the highest qualification totals recorded in the mixed team format. He added individual and mixed-team bronze medals at the ISSF World Cup in Bhopal.

At the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou (contested in 2023), Patil teamed with Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Divyansh Singh Panwar to win men’s team 10m air rifle gold; he was the highest scorer of the trio. He also qualified for the individual final and finished fourth in the men’s 10m air rifle individual event.

Public profile

Patil has been recognized domestically for his performances, including the Sportsman of the Year Award (Olympic Sports) at the 2023 Sportstar Aces Awards in Mumbai. Away from competition he is known to be an enthusiastic student of the sport, researching shooting’s history and studying fellow athletes’ profiles.

Academically he performed strongly in school, scoring over 90 percent in his ICSE board 12th-grade examinations, and has expressed an interest in pursuing UPSC examinations in the future.
