Early life and background
Miroslav Barnyashev was born on December 25, 1985, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Raised in that city, he attended a sports school while growing up and developed a strong interest in soccer that continues into adulthood. Barnyashev is Bulgarian by nationality and was raised in a Christian household; his mother is Slavka Barnyasheva. Public information lists no sisters and provides no name for his father or a brother.

Career
Barnyashev began training for professional wrestling in Bulgaria before moving into wider training opportunities. Early in his development he trained under veterans including Rikishi and Gangrel at the Knokx Wrestling Valley, and he was signed by WWE in 2011. WWE assigned him to their developmental system, Florida Championship Wrestling (which later became NXT), where he continued to develop his in‑ring skills.

While wrestling in FCW, Barnyashev suffered a serious neck injury that temporarily paralyzed his left arm. He traveled to Thailand for rehabilitation and while there studied Muay Thai as part of his recovery and continued athletic training.

He made his NXT debut on May 30, 2013, and was brought to WWE’s main roster at the Royal Rumble on January 26, 2014. Performing under the ring name Rusev and billed as “The Bulgarian Brute,” he established a reputation for power‑based offense, using finishing moves such as the Accolade and a savate kick/super kick. During his WWE tenure he captured the United States Championship twice and was recognized by Pro Wrestling Illustrated as the Most Improved Wrestler in 2014. PWI also ranked him No. 8 in their top 500 singles wrestlers list for 2015.

Rusev held the United States Championship for a 146‑day reign that ended when he dropped the title to John Cena at WrestleMania 31.
