Early life and backgroundSubrahmanyam Jaishankar was born on 9 January 1955 in New Delhi. He attended Air Force Central School in New Delhi and went on to study at St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi, where he completed his undergraduate degree. He then earned a master’s degree in political science and international relations, with a specialization in nuclear diplomacy, from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Jaishankar joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1977 and built a long career in diplomacy before entering electoral politics. Early overseas postings included First Secretary at the Indian Mission in Moscow in 1979 and a First Secretary role at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., in 1985. He also served as First Secretary in Sri Lanka and acted as political adviser to the Indian Peacekeeping Force there in 1988.
During the 1990s and 2000s Jaishankar held a series of senior appointments: Deputy Chief of Mission at India’s embassy in Tokyo in 1996, ambassador to the Czech Republic in 2000, Joint Secretary (America) at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi in 2004, and High Commissioner to Singapore in 2007.
