Early life and background

Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubrahmanyam was born on 4 June 1946 in Nellore, then part of the Madras Presidency in British India (now in Andhra Pradesh). Raised in a family with artistic roots—his father was a Harikatha performer—he developed an early interest in music and learned musical notation while still at school. As a young man he enrolled at JNTU College of Engineering Anantapur intending to become an engineer, but illness forced him to discontinue those studies. He later became an associate member of Chennai’s Institution of Engineers while continuing to pursue music.

Career

Balasubrahmanyam’s professional life began in the mid-1960s. He won an amateur singing competition in Madras in 1964, and by December 1966 he had his first Telugu film assignment. Over the next decades he established himself as a leading playback singer across South Indian film industries and in Hindi cinema. His repertoire included songs in at least 16 Indian languages, and he is credited with recording tens of thousands of songs over his lifetime.

He worked with many notable composers and musicians, initially leading a music troupe that included future luminaries, and later collaborating with composers such as Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman. Balasubrahmanyam sang for major films in multiple languages and contributed to popular Bollywood soundtracks, including songs for Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, and the title song of Chennai Express. He also provided playback singing for the Telugu film Sankarabharanam, which brought him international attention in 1980.

Beyond playback singing, Balasubrahmanyam took on roles as a music director, actor, dubbing artist and film producer. His voice was used as a dubbing voice for leading actors in dubbed releases, notably serving as the Telugu voice for Kamal Haasan on many occasions. He held records for prolific recording output, including claims of singing more than 40,000 songs and setting single-day and single-session recording marks in multiple languages.

Awards and honours

Over his career he received widespread recognition from state and national institutions. He was awarded the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India, and received multiple National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer for work spanning the late 1970s through the 1990s. He accumulated numerous state awards, Filmfare awards, Filmfare Awards South distinctions, and a variety of honorary doctorates from Indian universities. In 2017 he was given a lifetime achievement award at a major south Indian film awards ceremony.

Public profile

Balasubrahmanyam maintained a prominent public profile through his recordings, film appearances and stage performances. He was known for collaborating with leading singers of his era and for a versatile repertoire that ranged from classical-influenced film songs to contemporary popular numbers. He did not follow strict dietary rules commonly associated with singers and was noted for enjoying ice cream throughout his life. His family included his wife Savithri and two children, son S. P. B. Charan, who followed him into playback singing and film production, and a daughter, Pallavi. One of his sisters, S. P. Sailaja, is also a singer and actress.

Later years and health

In August 2020 he tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to MGM Healthcare in Chennai. He passed away on 25 September 2020 at MGM Hospital, Chennai, at the age of 74.
