Koduri Srisaila Sri Rajamouli was born on 10 October 1973 in Raichur, Karnataka, and grew up in Kovvur in West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. He attended C.R. Reddy College of Engineering in Eluru and completed a graduate-level education. He is the son of screenwriter-director Koduri Venkata Vijayendra Prasad. Rajamouli is known by the nickname Jakkanna.

Career

Rajamouli began his career working under established filmmakers, including a period assisting director K. Raghavendra Rao. He first directed for television with the Telugu serial Shanti Nivasam before moving into feature films. His early film directing credits include Student No.1 (Telugu, 2001). He has been credited with writing screenplays for several notable Telugu films, including Simhadri (2003), Sye (2004) and Vikramarkudu (2006).
