He later pursued a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, specialising in dynamics and control. In 2008 he enrolled at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras to pursue doctoral studies in mechanical engineering.

Career

Somanath joined the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in 1985 soon after his graduation and began working on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) project. Over the next decades he established himself as a specialist in launch vehicle design, structural engineering, dynamics and pyrotechnics, contributing to critical aspects of India’s launch capabilities.

During his ISRO career he took on a series of technical and leadership roles. He served as project director for the GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle and, in 2010, became associate director (projects) at VSSC. From 2015 to 2018 he led the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in Thiruvananthapuram as its director, and from 2018 until 2022 he was director of VSSC.

Under his leadership, a notable milestone was the December 18, 2014 experimental flight of the LVM3-X/CARE mission. He also received the team excellence award for GSLV Mk-III realisation and played an active role in resolving on-pad issues during launches, including an instance where a halted PSLV was brought back to launch readiness in minutes.

In January 2022 S. Somanath was appointed as the tenth chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Secretary of the Department of Space for a three-year term. He spoke publicly about his intention to broaden the benefits of the space programme across the country, strengthen technology and policy, and work with industry and capacity builders to expand the space economy.
