S. Unnikrishnan Nair (ISRO) Biography
Senior ISRO leader and rocket systems specialist who has played leading roles in India’s human spaceflight efforts and lunar exploration missions. Longtime
Early life and backgroundS. Unnikrishnan Nair hails from Kottayam, Kerala. He attended local schools including NSS High School, Manjoor and Emmanuel’s Higher Secondary School, Kothanalloor. He pursued higher education in engineering and related fields, earning a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, an M.Tech in aerospace-related disciplines from the Indian Institute of Science, a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Madras, and an MA in Telecommunications and Space Law from NALSAR. He has also taken numerous engineering courses abroad.
Career
Nair joined the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in 1985 as an engineer and has served at ISRO continuously since then. Over his career he has worked on launch vehicle mechanisms, acoustic protection systems and payload fairings for PSLV, GSLV and LVM3 vehicles, and contributed to the development of telemetry and monitoring systems used after launch.
He was selected in 2004 to join ISRO’s first Human Spaceflight Programme team. Over subsequent years he took major responsibilities for Gaganyaan-related activities: designing spacecraft systems, defining vehicle configuration, overseeing onboard systems engineering and maturing key technologies needed to carry crew. He led work on recovery systems, including parachute design, and helped coordinate cross-agency efforts with HAL, DRDO, the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard to develop sea-recovery protocols.
Nair served as payload director for the Crew Module Atmospheric Re-entry Experiment (CARE) in 2014, and later as mission director for development of the Crew Escape System, which was successfully tested in July 2018. He founded the Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) in Bengaluru in 2019 and became its director the same year, overseeing mission planning, crew survival systems, crew selection and training activities for Gaganyaan; he left the directorship in 2022.
In addition to human spaceflight responsibilities, Nair was part of the Chandrayaan-3 development team. He was appointed director of VSSC in 2022 and has held senior leadership roles at ISRO including Deputy Director of the Structures Entity at VSSC prior to his directorship. He also served as director of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology in 2022.
Beyond these roles, Nair led the Advanced Space Transportation System programme at ISRO as its director, tasked with integrating technologies for human spaceflight, reusable launch concepts and advanced propulsion and testing platforms.
Public profile
Nair has been recognized repeatedly within ISRO for his leadership on experimental and crewed-mission work. His awards include team and individual ISRO excellence and merit honours for contributions to the Space Capsule Recovery Experiment, the CARE experiment and the Gaganyaan project, and for leading the Crew Escape System Pad Abort test. He received an honorary doctorate from Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology for his Gaganyaan work and later received national-level awards such as the Atmanirbhar Award from the Indian Society of Analytical Science and the National Systems Gold Medal from the Systems Society of India in 2022.
He has taken on roles in international and professional bodies, serving as member-secretary at the International Academy of Astronautics and leading Indian delegations to space conferences in Russia. Domestically, he has been active in professional societies, including serving as president of the Trivandrum chapter of the Indian National Society for Aerospace and Related Mechanisms.
Outside of engineering, Nair is an environmentalist who has led conservation initiatives and has written articles on nature and space for Malayalam magazines. He has also authored research papers in scientific journals, with topics including resonator–cavity systems and scramjet flight testing.
Personal life
Nair is married to Jaya G. Nair, who worked as a computer engineer at VSSC and at the National Center for Software Technology. The couple have two daughters: Aishwarya Nair, an architect, and Chaithanya Nair, who has a degree in psychology and has worked as an actress and model.
Latest updates
In 2022 Nair became director of VSSC and in 2023 the LVM3-M4 rocket variant he helped design launched the Chandrayaan-3 mission from Sriharikota; the lander made a soft landing near the lunar south pole on 23 August 2023 after a 39-day journey. Nair continues to be associated with leadership roles at ISRO and with initiatives connected to India’s human spaceflight programme.
