Early life and background

Sabbhineni Meghana was born in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, and grew up in the same region. Her family includes a father who worked as a divisional engineer at an NTPC thermal power station, a mother who managed the household, and an elder sister named Geethika. Meghana attended DAV Public School in Vijayawada and later earned a bachelor of science degree.

Sporting activity featured in her childhood beyond cricket: she took part in badminton, skating and swimming, and competed at the national level in junior skating. Her initial exposure to cricket began when she reached seventh standard and attended a school cricket camp. Family interest in the sport and local neighbourhood matches involving her father encouraged her to pursue cricket more seriously.

She began formal training under coach Srinivas Reddy at an academy in Vijayawada. By 2008 she was selected for the under-19 Andhra Pradesh side and thereafter progressed through under-23 and senior state teams. Meghana is a right-handed batter who emerged through Andhra Pradesh age-group sides and represented South Zone in interzonal domestic competitions between the 2014–15 and 2016–17 seasons. Coaches including Purnima Rao, Nooshin al Khadeer and RSR Murthy were influential during her domestic development. In 2017 she was selected for South Central Railways through the talent quota and subsequently played for Indian Railways.

Her domestic contributions helped Indian Railways to several team successes: the BCCI Under-23 Women’s Trophy in 2019, the Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy in 2021, and the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy in 2022. She captained an India A side in two practice matches against England in 2018.

On the international stage Meghana made her T20I debut on 20 November 2016 against the West Indies at Vijayawada and her ODI debut on 11 February 2022 against New Zealand in Queenstown. In her third ODI outing she scored her maiden ODI half-century, an innings of 61 against New Zealand on 18 February 2022. She recorded her first T20I fifty on 3 October 2022, making 69 against the Maldives.

Meghana has been part of India squads that achieved notable results: she was named as a reserve in India’s squad for the 2022 ODI World Cup in New Zealand, contributed to India’s Asia Cup 2022 campaign, and was a member of the team that won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

In franchise cricket she represented the Trailblazers in the 2022 Women’s T20 Challenge. Ahead of the 2023 Women’s Premier League (WPL) season she was signed by Gujarat Giants at a base price of Rs 30 lakh.
