Veteran Bengali actor best known for portraying Satyajit Ray’s detective Feluda across multiple films and a long career in theatre, television and cinema.

Early life and background

Sabyasachi Chakrabarty was born on 8 September 1956 in Calcutta, West Bengal. He completed his schooling at Andrew’s High School in Kolkata and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Science from Hansraj College at the University of Delhi. After finishing his education in Delhi he returned to Kolkata and became involved with the theatre group Charbak in 1983.

Career

Chakrabarty began his on-screen career in television. His acting debut came with the TV drama Tero Parbon, telecast on Kolkata Doordarshan in 1987, in which he played the character Gora. He later appeared in numerous Bengali television productions, including Sey Shomoy (1989), Ekaki Aronye (2001), Ganer Opare (2010), In Their Life (2018), and Durga Soptosoti Sombhobami Juge Juge (2020). A TV film credit listed in his later work is Jamai Elo Ghare (2019) on ZEE5, where he portrayed the protagonist’s father-in-law.

On the big screen his film debut is recorded as Antardhan (1992), in which he played a police inspector named Rohit. Chakrabarty’s film work spans Bengali and Hindi cinema. His Hindi credits include Ascharya Deepak (1990), Dil Se (1998), Tarkash/Cell 3 (2000), Khakee (2004) and Parineeta (2005), in the latter playing Navinchandra Roy alongside Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt.

He is widely recognized for taking on the role of Feluda, the iconic fictional detective created by Satyajit Ray. Chakrabarty portrayed Feluda in several Ray-associated films, including Baksho Rahashya (1996), Bosepukure Khunkharapi (1997), Dr Munshir Diary (2000), Tintorettor Jishu (2008), and Double Feluda (2016). He has described Feluda as one of his favourite heroes from childhood and has spoken about returning to the role selectively.

He won BFJA awards in 1995, 2000 and 2003 for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and additional BFJA accolades in 1996 and 2005 for performances in specific films. Anandalok Awards recognised his acting in 2002 and 2004. Internationally, he received Best Actor at the Los Angeles Film Awards in 2019 for the film Anurup.
