Early life and background

Sachin Rajesh Pilot was born on 7 September 1977 in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a political family; his father was the late Rajesh Pilot, a well-known Congress leader, and his mother is Rama Pilot. He was raised in Saharanpur and attended Air Force Bal Bharati School in New Delhi before enrolling at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, where he completed a B.A. He also earned a diploma in marketing from I.M.T. Ghaziabad and an MBA in Multinational Management and Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Pilot is identified with the Gurjar community (Other Backward Class) and follows Hinduism. He has described himself as non-vegetarian and lists film-watching and reading among his hobbies.

Career

Sachin Pilot began his electoral career in national politics when he was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004. Early in his parliamentary tenure he served on the Standing Committee of the Lok Sabha on Home Affairs and on the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections Pilot won the Ajmer seat, defeating a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate by a substantial margin. He was appointed Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology and later served as Union Minister of State for Corporate Affairs from 2012 until 2014. In the 2014 general election he lost the Ajmer seat.

After moving to state politics, Pilot won a Rajasthan Legislative Assembly seat from the Tonk constituency in 2018 and became the youngest Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan. In July 2020 he was dismissed from the offices he held in the Rajasthan government. He continued his political work and in 2023 he again contested the Tonk assembly seat and won by a margin of 29,475 votes.

Outside elected office, Pilot has combined political work with other pursuits. He authored a book in memory of his father, co-writing Rajesh Pilot: In Spirit Forever. In September 2012 he became the first sitting Union minister commissioned as an officer in the Territorial Army, fulfilling a longstanding interest in military service.
