Early life and background

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born on 24 April 1973 at Nirmal Nursing Home in Dadar, Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra. He grew up in Mumbai and completed his schooling at Indian Education Society’s New English School in Bandra (East) and later at Shardashram Vidyamandir School in Dadar. Tendulkar comes from a family with literary roots; his father, Ramesh Tendulkar, was a Marathi novelist, and his mother, Rajni, worked in the insurance sector. He has three elder half‑siblings.

Career

Tendulkar emerged as a prodigious batting talent and went on to represent India across formats for more than two decades. A right‑handed batsman known for his composure on the field and a favourite shot in the straight drive, he made his Test debut on 15 November 1989 against Pakistan in Karachi and his One Day International debut on 18 December 1989 against Pakistan in Gujranwala. He played a single T20I on 1 December 2006 against South Africa in Johannesburg.

Across a career that included 200 Test matches and 463 ODIs, Tendulkar established a string of long‑standing records. He finished with the most Test runs (15,921) and the most ODI runs (18,426) in the history of the game, and remains the only player to score 100 international centuries. He recorded the first double century in ODI cricket and accumulated an unparalleled tally of centuries in both Tests (51) and ODIs (49). He also holds records for the most matches played in both formats and numerous World Cup milestones, including the highest aggregate runs in World Cups and the most centuries at the tournament.

Tendulkar’s international retirement came in stages: he announced his retirement from One Day Internationals on 23 December 2012 and confirmed he would retire from all formats after the November 2013 Test series against the West Indies; his final Test appearance was in Mumbai on 14–16 November 2013. Domestically he represented Mumbai and played in the Indian Premier League for Mumbai Indians, wearing the iconic jersey number 10 for India and Mumbai Indians for much of his career. His playing career earned him numerous national and international honours. India recognised his contribution to sport with awards including the Arjuna Award (1994), the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (1997–98), the Padma Shri (1999), and the Padma Vibhushan (2008). In 2014 he received India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna. He was Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1997, an honorary Group Captain of the Indian Air Force in 2010, and in 2019 he was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. In 2013 the Indian Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp in his honour, and in 2020 a World Cup moment from 2011 received a Laureus Sporting Moment award.

Tendulkar married Anjali, a paediatrician, on 24 May 1995. The couple have two children: a daughter, Sara, and a son, Arjun, who has been involved in cricket.
