Sadhana Shivdasani Biography
Sadhana Shivdasani, known mononymously as Sadhana and celebrated for the iconic fringe that came to be called the ‘Sadhana haircut,’ was a leading Hindi‑M
Early life and backgroundSadhana Shivdasani was born on 2 September 1941 in Karachi, Sind, in what was then British India. Her family relocated to Bombay during the post‑partition unrest when she was a child. Reportedly the only child of her parents, she was named after the actress‑dancer Sadhana Bose. She completed her schooling at Auxilium Convent High School in Wadala and went on to pursue higher education at Jai Hind College in Mumbai.
As a youngster she appeared in films in minor or uncredited roles, including a chorus appearance in Shree 420 in 1955 and parts as a child artist in several 1950s productions. Directors and producers who saw her perform in a college play began approaching her while she was still in her teens. Her early exposure at Filmalaya and attention from established figures in the industry helped launch her screen career.
Career
Sadhana made her breakthrough as a lead actress with the 1960 romantic comedy Love in Simla. Her look in that film — a fringe inspired by Audrey Hepburn and created by director R.K. Nayyar — became widely imitated and popularly known as the Sadhana haircut. That film’s success led to a string of prominent roles across genres during the 1960s.
She worked on several commercially successful and critically noted projects early in her career, with memorable performances in titles such as Parakh, Hum Dono, Asli‑Naqli, Ek Musafir Ek Haseena and Mere Mehboob. Her pairings with leading actors and the emotive musical sequences in films like Hum Dono and Mere Mehboob reinforced her popularity. Directors including Raj Khosla directed her in multiple films and were important collaborators.
Sadhana earned Filmfare nominations for her performances in Woh Kaun Thi and Waqt in 1964. During the late 1960s her health was affected by hyperthyroidism, a condition that required treatment abroad and forced her to step back from acting for a period. She returned to the screen in 1969 and continued to work through the 1970s, though her health continued to shape her career choices.
In 1974 she and her husband formed a production company. Under that banner she made her directorial debut with the crime thriller Geeta Mera Naam, which she also produced alongside her husband and established actors. She later produced Pati Parmeshwar in 1989. Sadhana’s final screen appearance was in Ulfat Ki Nayee Manzeelein, released in 1994.
Across her acting career Sadhana appeared in a relatively small number of films but accumulated a high ratio of hits: sources note she delivered 28 successful films out of 33. Although she did not accumulate major award trophies, she remained one of the defining heroines of 1960s Hindi cinema and retained a strong public profile thereafter.
Public profile
Sadhana was widely associated with the moniker “The Mystery Girl” for several of her film roles that emphasized enigmatic or suspenseful characters. Her distinctive hairstyle and her performances in romantic and dramatic songs made her a style icon and a fixture of the period’s popular culture. Colleagues and contemporaries remembered her for her expressive screen presence and for scenes that remained memorable in the public imagination.
Her marriage to director Ram Krishna (R.K.) Nayyar took place on 7 March 1966. The couple worked together professionally and remained married until his death in 1995. They did not have children. Later in life, after stepping back from regular film work, she described a routine built around gardening, socializing with friends, and modest domestic pursuits.
Later life and death
Sadhana’s health challenges included hyperthyroidism during her career and, later, a battle with cancer. She died on 25 December 2015 in Mumbai at the age of 74. The reported cause of death was cancer.
