Sahaya Sheelan Shadrach, known professionally as Sadhu Kokila, was born on 24 March 1966 in Bangalore (then Mysore State), and grew up in a Christian family in Bengaluru. Music was part of his upbringing: his father Natesh worked as a musician and his mother Mangala was a playback singer. He began formal musical training at a young age under S J Joseph and later developed a reputation as a very fast keyboard player.

He attended St. Joseph's Indian High School in Bangalore and was active in school sport, playing on the under-13 football team. Short stature prevented him from progressing to the state team, but his early life remained firmly connected to performance and music.

Career

Sadhu Kokila’s onscreen career started in the early 1990s. His first film appearance came in Sorry (1992), and in 1993 he both acted in and composed music for the film Shhh!, a project that also led filmmaker Upendra to give him the stage name Sadhu Kokila. He continued to work across multiple disciplines in Kannada cinema: as an actor, director, producer, composer, playback singer, screenwriter, lyricist and comedian.

As a composer, Kokila’s early credits include Curfew (1994) and Mangalya Sakshi (1995), and he provided music for several other Kannada films through the late 1990s and 2000s. His directing debut came with Raktha Kanneeru (2003), and he went on to direct films such as Rakshasa (2005), Suntaragaali (2006), Anatharu (2007), Mr. Theertha (2010) and Police Story 3 (2011). He also produced films, with 90 (2011) cited as one of his production credits.

Onscreen, Kokila built a strong profile as a comedian and supporting actor. He appeared in notable Kannada films including Om (1995), O Mallige (1997), Bombat Halva (1999), Kiladi (2000) and Nagarahavu (2002).
